Tunisian Operator Upgrades GPRS Core Network

Tunisian mobile operator, Tunisiana has modernized its GPRS core network following an upgrade contract which was awarded to Nokia Siemens Networks. The company installed its Flexi ISN, which performs GPRS Gateway Service Node (GGSN) and data charging functionalities, and is fully integrated with the existing Nokia Siemens Networks charge@once prepaid solution to enable flexible charging of data services.  more

Guamcell Upgrades Backhaul Network

Guam based mobile operator, Guamcell has awarded a cellular backhaul contract to Exalt Communications. Guamcell, which operates a CDMA network on the island of Guam, launched a GSM overlay across the island in late 2007. The GSM service includes a GPRS core network, and is planning to deploy 3G.  more

Telstra Activates "3G Direct Tunnel" on its HSDPA Network

Australia's Telstra has activated an important new feature for the Mobile Packet Core network called 3G Direct Tunnel on their WCDMA/HSPA network. The equipment for this was provided by Ericsson. The 3G Direct Tunnel feature provides a direct connection between the 3G networks RNC (Radio Network Controller) and GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node), hence capacity increase to Telstra's mobile packet core network.  more

Ericsson Wins 3-Year HSPA Contract in Hong Kong

Ericsson has been selected by Hong Kong's SmarTone-Vodafone as the sole supplier for a three year network expansion contract. Under the terms of the agreement, Ericsson will be the sole supplier of a HSPA-enabled radio access network, including Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS), a functionality that enables mobile-TV services to be broadcast. The deal also includes a fully IP-based core network, including IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), Ericsson's Mobile Softswitch Solution, and Redback's SmartEdge routers.  more

Cook Islands Operator Completes GSM Softswitch Migration

Telecom Cook Islands has completed the commercial deployment of a GSM softswitch from ADC. The new softswitch -- which upgrades the carrier's core wireless network to more efficient, IP-based technology -- has been in deployment since September of 2007, and the final network cutover was accomplished last week. The network upgrade enabled by the UltraWave GSM softswitch includes an overall expansion of the network's capacity from 8,000 to 15,000 subscribers along with new services such as prepaid calling, SMS, voicemail, and GPRS data.  more

RAN equipment market down 2% due to slowdowns in N. America and Europe

Worldwide sales of radio access network (RAN) equipment are down 2% to $10 billion in 3Q07, following a 4% increase in 2Q07, according to Infonetics Research's quarterly report. Meanwhile, the number of mobile subscribers continues to climb, expected to be up 20% year-over-year by the end of 2007, and forecast to reach 4.2 billion worldwide by 2010, the report shows.  more
