The UK telecoms regulator, Oftel has extended its price controls by a further year on Vodafone and BTCellnet. The controls, which set the cellular networks tariffs at the UK Retail Price Index minus 7% per year were due to expire next month, but will now last until next March. The regulator had wanted to impose tougher price controls, but after objections from the operators it had to refer the issue to the government Competition Commission to decide if the market needed price controls. more

South African competition investigation
South Africa's Competition Commission has launched an investigation into the simultaneous tariff rises from the two GSM networks in the country. The commission is to also investigate the GSM roaming agreement signed between Vodacom and the markets new entrant Cell-C to ensure there are no competition issues. The commissioner, Menzi Simelane said that a preliminary report will be ready in about three weeks and from that a decision will be made if a full investigation will be warranted. There have been previous complaints of collusion between the networks, particularly in 1996 when a leaked memo indicated that the networks were co-operating on tariff changes." more

EU will clamp down of 3G overcharging
The EU Competition Commissioner, Mario Monti has said in a speech that the EU will operate an level field in Europe with regards to pricing controls on future 3G networks. He said that the Competition Commission would not be concerned with how the licenses were awarded when deciding if a company was overcharging its customers. "We should not consider the huge investments made in acquiring the licences as a justification for excessive consumer prices, unacceptable concentration levels or leniency on state aid." said Monti in Barcelona yesterday." more

The European Union's competition commission has confirmed that it has received a complaint from the USA based MCI WorldCom regarding the cost of terminating calls of several mobile phone networks. Media reports say that the networks involved are DeTeMobil, Mannesmann Mobilfunk, the Dutch KPN and Libertel networks and Sweden's Comviq." more

EU Approves Vodafone-AirTouch Merger
The European Union's competition commission has approved the merger of the two companies, subject to Vodafone selling its interests in E-Plus, the German GSM1800 network.
