Vodafone Signs Tower Sharing Deal with NZ Communications

New Zealand's 3rd mobile operator, NZ Communications says that it has inked a deal with Vodafone to rent space on up to 116 of the rival operator's towers. The company has delayed its launch several times citing problems with securing locations for its base stations, so the move should help accelerate its network rollout.  more

Further Delays for New Zealand's 3rd Mobile Network

New Zealand's third mobile operator, NZ Communications has again delayed its network launch - this time until late next year. The operator's most recent plan was to launch its network this coming October, but a report in the Business Day newspaper said that the company has only built 50 of the required 400 base stations it needs to launch services.  more

TelstraClear Shutting Down Pilot Wireless Network in New Zealand

TelstraClear has said that it's pilot wireless network in Tauranga is to be shut down because of an alleged deliberate last minute change by Vodafone which the company says made the service uncompetitive. TelstraClear Chief Executive Dr Allan Freeth says an eleventh hour change to a key component of its roaming arrangements has forced the company to make the tough decision to halt the project and focus on investments in existing and new services.  more

New Zealand Operator Signs Huawei Contract

The New Zealand arm of Econet Wireless, recently renamed as NZ Communications says that it has signed a contract with Huawei to build a nationwide cellular network. The company, which was granted a license over six years ago says that it will now take about 18 months to build its infrastructure. Huawei had signed a contract back in 2005 to build a core radio network in Auckland, although it is not known if any work was carried out. more
