India's GSM Operators Lose Legal Battle Against CDMA Firms

India's High Court in Delhi has rejected a petition by the GSM network operators to block the government from allowing the incumbent CDMA operators from offering GSM services. The GSM operators had told the court that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) was trying to pass-off a second license to each of the CDMA operators for free.  more

India Telecom Assoc: Remove Penalties for Unsolicited Calls

Reliance India Base Sees 2007 Growth Fall Behind 2006

The latest figures from the Indian operators' associations the coai and AUSPI show that the Indian mobile market has seen a net 20.55m new customers in the first four months of 2007 - less than the 20.96m recorded in the same period in 2006. The reason for this is two-fold. Firstly, in April 2006 Reliance Communications made an adjustment to the way it counted mobile subscribers, including its fixed-wireless customers in the figures for the first time and boosting its ranks as a result. Secondly, March 2007 saw the termination of India's customer re-verification procedure whereby the personal details of all of the country's mobile subscribers had to be checked by the operators - and a procedure which saw the same operator, Reliance, disconnect some 4m unverified customers. more

India and China: December Customer Numbers

The two large Chinese mobile operators both reported their December customer numbers last week, on the same day that the coai published the same data for the Indian GSM operators. The two sets of data make an interesting comparison. Previously, we have suggested that while the Chinese market has the appearance of a controlled economy, with its near linear growth, the Indian market's expansion looked to be becoming exponential. more

Fastmobile Wins Mobile Instant Messaging in India

Fastmobile, and its technology partner Jataayu Software, have announced that India's coai and each of the nine operator members of the Cellular Operators' Association of India (coai - Airtel, Hutch, IDEA Cellular, BPL Mobile, Aircel, MTNL, BSNL, Reliance Mobile and Spice Telecom), have selected Fastmobile and Jataayu to provide a range of services that will enable them to activate and sustain mobile communities. more

Indian Regulator Orders Tariff Changes

India's regulator, TRAI has issued an order to the mobile network operators in the States of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh not to charge differential tariffs for calls terminating in BSNL network and other service providers networks. Following a license amendment, calls between Mumbai Metro & Maharashtra Telecom Circle, Chennai Metro & Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle, Kolkata Metro & West Bengal Telecom Circle and UP (East) & UP (West) Telecom Circle Service Areas were treated as intra-service area calls for the purpose of call routing and levy of ADC. more

India GSM Networks Record Additions in November

India's coai has reported a subscriber growth of 2.32 million during the month of November'05, which is once again a record high, being 10% higher than the previous month. This is now the highest monthly subscriber additions (2.32 million) recorded by the GSM industry since inception of service. The cumulative All India GSM subscriber base has now grown to 55.31 million in November 2005, up from 52.98 million in October 2005, a growth of 4.4% for the month under review. more

Record GSM Subscriber Additions in India

India's coai has again reported a record subscriber growth of more than 2 million subscribers during the month of October'05 - the highest subscriber additions (2.11 million) since inception of service. The cumulative GSM subscriber base grew to 52.98 million in October 2005, up from 50.87 million in September 2005, a growth of 4.15% for the month under review. more
