American Tower to buy 196 Towers from Cincinnati Bell
US tower owner, American Tower has entered into an agreement to acquire 196 of Cincinnati Bell's wireless communications towers for US$100 million. The towers are located primarily in Ohio and Kentucky and currently average 2.1 tenants per tower. Cincinnati Bell will remain a tenant on all 196 towers pursuant to a long-term Master Lease Agreement. more

USA's MetroPCS Looks Set to Overtake US Cellular
In Q4 08, the remaining seven US operators with between 0.25m and 10m customers collectively recorded their best quarter since Q1 07, adding 0.87m customers to finish the year with an aggregate total of 18.20m. However, this gain was entirely attributable to budget networks Leap Wireless and MetroPCS, with the other five recording a net loss to their aggregated customer base. MetroPCS, the second largest of the seven, added a record 0.52m customers to finish on 5.37m, while Leap scored its second best ever figure of 0.38m to finish on 3.84m. more

Four out of Seven Small US Networks Lost Customers in Q3
The Verizon-Alltel merger, which was recently approved by the FCC, will leave an even greater gap between the large and small US mobile operators; there will be no networks of between 7m and 30m customers. There are currently seven networks with fewer than 7m but more than 0.25m customers, although if AT&T's plan to buy Centennial is successful, there will only be six remaining. At the end of Q3 08, these seven had 17.33m customers in total. Aggregated annual growth stood at 13.1%, compared to 15.9% for T-Mobile ,14.0% for AT&T, 11.2% for Verizon and -6.3% for Sprint. more

US Small Operators Q2 - Customer Growth Falls but Mixed Results for ARPU
The US market has undergone some consolidation recently, but there remain seven operators with between 250k and 10m subscribers. The largest of these is US Cellular, which finished Q2 08 with 6.19m subscribers. Three others had more than 1m customers: MetroPCS (4.60m), Leap (3.31m) and Centennial (1.09m). Qwest, which recently started selling Verizon Wireless plans having terminated its contract with Sprint, had 0.81m at the end of the quarter. Finally, regional players Cincinnati Bell and Ntelos had 0.58m and 0.43m respectively. more

USA's Smaller Operators - MetroPCS and Leap Leading the Chasing Pack
At the end of Q1 2008, the combined customer base of the six small US operators (Cincinnati Bell, Leap Wireless, MetroPCS, Ntelos, Qwest and US Cellular) was 15.53m, up from 13.66m a year earlier. This is equivalent to an annual growth rate of 13.6%. This is below the growth rates posted by T- Mobile (18.4%) and AT&T (14.7%) for the 12 months ended 31st March 2008, although it is higher than the 10.6% recorded by Verizon and much better than the -0.6% Sprint Nextel reported yesterday. more

Small US Operators - Q4 2007 Results
Since Rural Cellular, Suncom and Dobson have been sold to Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T respectively, there are now six mobile operators in the US which have between 250k and 10m customers. The largest of the six is US Cellular, which finished 2007 on 6.122m customers. The only other two companies with more than 1m customers are MetroPCS and Leap, with 3.963m and 2.864m respectively. The remaining three, in order of magnitude, are Qwest (0.824m), Cincinnati Bell (0.571m) and Ntelos (0.407m). more

Cincinnati Bell Customers Can Receive Voicemails as SMS
Cincinnati Bell's postpaid wireless subscribers can now opt to have their incoming voice messages converted to text and sent to their mobile phone via a service from SpinVox. The partnership with Cincinnati Bell, initially announced in February, and the launch of the service marks the first commercial deployment by SpinVox with a wireless carrier. SpinVox will be announcing additional deployments in North America and around the world in the months to come. more
