Chunghwa Telecom 3rd-Quarter Profits Down by 18%

­Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom has reported a 1.7% decline in its 3rd-quarter revenues to NT$50.1 billion (US$1.54 billion), while net profits dropped by 17.9% to NT$10.9 billion (US4335 million). As of September 30, 2009, Chunghwa had 9.18 million mobile subscribers, slightly up quarter-over-quarter by 1.6% compared to 9.04 million as of June 30, 2009.  more

China Wants TD-SCDMA to Take 20% of 3G Market by 2020

The Chinese government is seeking to push its home grown 3G standard overseas and has set a target to take 20 percent of the overseas 3G subscriber market by 2020. The plans were revealed in a long-term development plan for mobile communication drafted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), an industry expert has told the Interfax news agency.   more

Taiwanese Operators Considering Chinese 3G Standard

Two of Taiwan's mobile network operators are reported to be considering China's home-grown 3G technology, TD-SCDMA for their networks. Chunghwa Telecom and Far EasTone are in talks with Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), which signed a deal with China's Datang Telecom to set up a trial TD-SCDMA network on the island, an ITRI spokeswoman has told the Reuters news agency.  more

Alvarion Wins Taiwanese Mobile WiMAX Contract

Alvarion says that it has won a new Mobile WiMAX network contract from Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom for the northeastern county of Yilan. The network has been contracted by the local government. The broadband wireless network built using Alvarion's end-to-end mobile WiMAX solution and supported by eASPNet services covers Lodong Town, Yilan City, and popular scenic areas in Yilan County.  more

Taiwan Debates Renewing GSM Licenses in 2012

There is a dispute amongst Taiwan's mobile network operators over the fate of the existing GSM licenses which are due to expire in 2012. The incumbent holders want them renewed, while the 3G and WiMAX license holders want the licenses terminated and the radio spectrum refarmed to all the companies.  more

Chunghwa Telecom Revenues Down - Profits Up

Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom has reported a slight drop in first quarter revenues of 3.6% to NT$49.1 billion (US$1.46 billion), although profits rose by 0.7% to NT$10.8 billion (US$320 million). Mobile revenue decreased 3.1% to NT$17.6 billion (US$522 million); mobile VAS revenue increased by 18.5%.  more
