Alcatel-Lucent Wins Chinese Contracts Worth $1.7 Billion

China Telecom Q1 Profits Down 27%
China Telecom has reported a first quarter profit of RMB 4.7 billion (US$686 million), a 27% drop from the RMB 6.47 billion a year earlier. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell 3.8% to RMB 22.2 billion and the EBITDA margin decreased to 43.6% from 52.1% the previous year. more

China Telecom Profits Slump 96.3% on Write-Downs
China Telecom has reported a 96.3 percent slump in its full-year profits after making a RMB 24 billion (US$3.5 billion) write-down of its legacy XiaoLingTong wireless network which faces closure. Both China Telecom and China Unicom have been ordered to shut down their low-cost XiaoLingTong mobile telephone system in order to free up the radio spectrum for 3G services. The two companies have been given three years to shut down the networks. more

China Telecom Offers Free Mobile Internet Access as Prepares for 3G Launch
China Telecom, which recently took over the CDMA network formerly owned by China Unicom has started offering free mobile internet access as it prepares to roll out its 3G network upgrade in the capital city. The South China Morning Post reported that new subscribers will get between 20 and 50 megabytes of free internet usage per month, depending on their tariff. more

Growth back on track as China Telecom records first gain
Having seen monthly gains averaging 8.9m in the first six months of 2008, the Chinese market did not manage to post a figure above 7.9m in the second six months of the year. This was because of the impact of Unicom's sale of its CDMA network: in July-September, Unicom saw monthly declines in its CDMA base, presumably because its imminent sale reduced the need to attract new customers; in October, China Telecom acquired the network and cleaned up the base, with a net loss of 13.3m; and in November and December there were further losses to the CDMA base, presumably due to further rationalisation. more
