China Unicom Aims to Offer 3G Services in 55 Cities By July
China Unicom says that it aniticpates launching its WCDMA network in 55 Chinese cities by the middle of this year - and expand coverage to 280 cities by the end of the year. This compares with China Telecom's plans to cover 100 cities with its CDMA 3G network within three months, and China Mobile's plans to cover 238 cities by the end of this year. more

China Mobile Plans $8.6 Billion 3G CAPEX in 2009

China's Handset Industry Growth Slowed in Second Half of 2008
According to statistics of the ITIS project - a project initiated by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs and conducted by Taipei-based MIC - China's mobile phone industry reached a shipment volume of 175.2 million units in the third quarter of 2008, representing 6.2% sequential growth and 4.3% year-on-year growth. The industry's growth rate, which peaked in 2006, gradually slowed down to mid-single digits. This indicated that the Chinese mobile phone industry was significantly impacted by a slowdown in global market demand. more

Alcatel-Lucent Wins Chinese CDMA Contract
Alcatel-Lucent has won a US$320 million CDMA contract from China Telecom to increase the capacity and coverage of its mobile voice and data network throughout the country. The contract was secured through Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent's Chinese subsidiary. more

China Telecom disregards almost â…“ of CDMA subscribers due to credit doubts
In October 2008, for the first time in its history, the Chinese market reported a monthly decline in customer numbers. This was not the latest sign of global economic meltdown, but rather a consequence of China TelecomÃ's acquisition of China UnicomÃ's CDMA network. At the point of acquisition, Unicom counted 41.73m CDMA subscribers while Telecom reported 29.08m, the discrepancy being the result of differing counting methodologies: Telecom disregarded customers who had not paid their most recent bill or who it was not confident would continue to pay in the future. Only 6.8% of the total CDMA customer base were prepaid customers at the end of September, so the vast majority of uncounted customers were on contracts. more
