China to Allocate Additional Spectrum to 3G Networks

It has been reported that China is planning to allocate additional radio spectrum to the homegrown 3G service, by taking it from the low-cost XiaoLingTong local area wireless service. Xie Feipo, from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that the ministry had asked fixed-line operators to return the PHS radio spectrum so it could be reassigned to the TD-SCDMA network.  more

China Telecom Completes Purchase of Unicom CDMA Network

China Unicom Starts 3G Trial

China Unicom is reported to have started a trial WCDMA based network in Baoding City in northern China's Hebei Province. Industry sources told the Interfax news agency that the trials have already commenced.  more

China Unicom Doubles First Half Profits

China Unicom has reported a doubling of its first half profits as the company nears the completion of its merger with landline operator, China Netcom. The company said that earnings for the six months through June 30 were RMB4.42 billion ($642 million), up from the RMB2.2 billion in the same period last year, and beating the average forecast of RMB4.18 billion from seven analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires. Revenues rose by 4% to RMB35.1 billion ($5.1 billion).  more

Influence of Telecom Restructuring in China's Telecom Market

On May 24, 2008, a telecom-restructuring plan was decided, triggering a new round of discussions in a telecom industry that had been quiet for some time.
