Alcatel Mobile Phone Profits Soar - Secures Initial Chinese 3G Phone Orders

Alcatel Mobile Phones - which is actually a subsidiary of China's TCL Communication - has reported net profit for the first half of 2008 of HK$112 million (US$14.34 million) compared to 2007's HK$2 million. The Group's revenue for the first half amounted to HK$2,340 million (US$299.6 million), representing an increase of 13% from that of the corresponding period in 2007.  more

China Mobile Starts Selling BlackBerry Handsets

China Mobile has finally launched its long-delayed BlackBerry service, but is limited the availability to corporate customers. The operator has started selling the rather elderly BlackBerry 8700 in around a hundred retail outlets nationwide amongst rumours that the company has ordered less than 10,000 handsets. TCL Communications - the Chinese manufacturer of RIM's BlackBerry 8700 - is supplying the handsets which will be sold under the "Alcatel BlackBerry 8700" brandname. more

China Mobile Planning to buy 2 Million 3G Handsets

China Mobile is reported to be planning a TD-SCDMA handset tender later this year which could be worth between US$500 and US$780 million. China Mobile, which has already spent a similar sum to purchase 3G network equipment for 10 cities, will buy two million TD-SCDMA phones in October, according to Chen Haofei, the secretary general of TD-SCDMA Forum. The handsets are expected to retail for between US$260 and US$390 per unit. more
