China Mobile Reported to be in Talks to Buy Telenor Pakistan

China Mobile is reported to be in talks with Norway's Telenor concerning a merger of their respective Pakistani mobile networks. Although both the operators have denied any such development, sources told the local Dawn newspaper that negotiations were being held secretly at the group level. The deal is thought to involve China Mobile buying Telenor Pakistan and then merging the two networks.  more

China Mobile Spending $10 Billion on Rural GSM Coverage

China Mobile plans to invest RMB 70 billion (US$10.24 billion) over the next three years to expand in its network in rural areas, said company Vice President Li Zhengmao. The company has spend RMB19.5 billion over past five years expanding its network to 60,000 villages.  more

Chinese iPhone May Come Without Wi-Fi

Far EasTone Shareholders Approve China Mobile Investment

Gemalto Supplying to All Three Mobile Operators in China

Smartcard vendor, Gemalto says that it has started supplying its UICC (Universal Identity Cryptographic Computer) and R-UIM (Removable User Identity Module) cards to all three mobile operators in China for their 3G networks. With deliveries made through its joint ventures in China, Gemalto says that it is the first provider to be fully qualified to support the different 3G wireless standards; CDMA EVDO, TD-SCDMA and WCDMA.  more

Three Bidders Win Addition Radio Spectrum in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's telecoms regulator has concluded an auction of radio spectrum that started earlier this week - stating that three mobile network operators have successfully bid for a total of 9.6 MHz of radio spectrum in the 1800 MHz frequency band at a total of upfront spectrum utilization fee of HK$46.1 million (US$5.95 million).  more

Survey finds price and network performance key to 3G takeoff in China

With the high profile release of China Unicom's 3G brand "WO", mobile operators in China have officially declared 3G war.
