Verizon Wireless to Offer Mobile Coverage on Chicago Underground Railway
The chicago Transit Authority says that it has secured an agreement with Verizon Wireless to provide mobile phone coverage in the city's subway tunnels. Verizon joins U.S. Cellular in providing coverage in trains when underground. more

Chicago's subway system to get underground mobile coverage
Allgon Telecom, in a contract with Aldridge Electric has been selected to provide a comprehensive wireless telecommunications coverage solution for the chicago Transit Authority rapid subway tunnels, underground stations and station passageways. Once completed, the project will be the first state-of-the-art multi-provider, multi-technology wireless coverage solution deployed in a U.S. mass transit system. The 18-month installation is expected to commence immediately, with limited service throughout the two 11.4 mile tunnels available to carriers in seven to nine months. more

Chicago's underground railway to get mobile phone coverage
The chicago Transit Board has approved a contract for the installation of a wireless telecoms system in the CTA's rapid transit subway tunnels, underground stations and station passageways. The completed system will enhance the CTA's existing two-way radio system and improve redundant subway communication options for CTA, chicago Police Dept. and chicago Fire Dept./EMS personnel. more

American court rejects cell phone tax
In America, an Illinois Supreme Court has ruled that cell phone networks cannot be charged a "right of way" tax by local authorities, as the cellular networks do not own any underground infrastructure that requires the networks to have a "right of way" capability. The City of chicago authorities collected about US$30 million from the tax last year. The court ruling was made after complaints from PrimeCo and US Cellular, and could lead to a reduction in phone bills of around 2% for local users." more
