Verizon Wireless to Offer Mobile Coverage on Chicago Underground Railway

U.S. Cellular has selected Lucent Technologies to provide equipment, software and professional services in the chicago market. The multi-year agreement is valued at up to US$150 million. U.S. Cellular's network currently supports CDMA 1xRTT voice and data offerings. When the new equipment from Lucent is deployed, U.S. Cellular will have the opportunity and flexibility to offer next-generation mobile high-speed data and Voice over IP services, including 1xEV-DO capabilities. Lucent's base station equipment can be easily enhanced to support CDMA2000 1xEV-DO services. more

US Cellular sees rising revenues
US Cellular has reported service revenues of US$575.4 million for the fourth quarter of 2002, up 25% from US$461.9 million in the comparable period a year ago. Operating income plus depreciation and amortization expense decreased 10% to US$136.6 million, primarily due to costs related to the launch of the U.S. Cellular brand in the chicago market. more

US Cellular to buy into Chicago
U.S. Cellular, the USA's eighth largest wireless service provider, has said that it is to buy the chicago operations of PrimeCo for approximately US$610 million. At the close of the transaction, chicago-based U.S. Cellular will begin providing wireless service to the chicagoland area, as well as Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, Decatur, and Springfield, and expanded service to Peoria and Rockford, Ill. Additionally, U.S. Cellular will have the ability to provide wireless service to South Bend and Fort Wayne, Ind., and Benton Harbor, Mich. The transaction is subject to approval by the telecoms regulator and the Department of Justice. more
