MTS India Partners with IBM for Data Centers
IBM has won a contract from MTS India, , the mobile telephony services brand of Sistema Shyam TeleServices (SSTL) to design and build two data centres - one each in chennai and Gurgaon - for the company. The data centre solution being deployed by IBM provides the facility to scale power and cooling automatically depending on the load. IBM will also build a Network Operations Centre (NOC) to help the SSTL team monitor and manage applications and network in a 24/7 environment. more

Russia's MTS Launches a CDMA Network in India
Russian backed Indian mobile network operator, Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL) has launched its CDMA network Tamil Nadu, chennai and Pondicherry, under the MTS brand. The company outlined plans for a US$5 billion investment over the next five years, and expects to list on the local stock-exchange by the end of next year. more

Maxis Planning US$4 Billion Investment in Indian Subsidiary
Malaysia's Maxis Communications plans to invest upwards of US$5 billion over the next four years in its Indian subsidiary, Aircel to expand the network and boost capacity. Aircel has spent some US$2 billion since the company was set up - with over $500 million last year. more

AT&T Eyeing Up Indian Mobile Operator Acquisition
AT&T is said to be considering a joint venture with India's Aircel - by purchasing the stake in the company held by Malaysia's Maxis. Aircel was valued at nearly US$1.5 billion in January 2006 when investor Sivasankaran had offloaded his entire stake to Maxis. At the time, the company had around 2.6 million subscribers, although this has now risen to around 6.2 million. The rapid growth in India's mobile market will push that valuation up significantly. more

Indian Regulator Orders Tariff Changes
India's regulator, TRAI has issued an order to the mobile network operators in the States of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh not to charge differential tariffs for calls terminating in BSNL network and other service providers networks. Following a license amendment, calls between Mumbai Metro & Maharashtra Telecom Circle, chennai Metro & Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle, Kolkata Metro & West Bengal Telecom Circle and UP (East) & UP (West) Telecom Circle Service Areas were treated as intra-service area calls for the purpose of call routing and levy of ADC. more

GSM coverage improvements for India
India's Bharti Tele-Ventures says that it is planning a major expansion of its coverage in the Andhra Pradesh, chennai & Tamil Nadu license circles. The company is planning to expand its coverage in Andhra Pradesh by 50% while also adding 35 new base stations in the city of chennai and a further 453 base stations in the next six months in Tamil Nadu. more

Ericsson wins Indian GSM and GPRS contract
Ericsson has signed GSM and GPRS orders exceeding US$70 million with Bharti Enterprises in India. The orders include Ericsson's first GPRS deployments in India. The contracts cover complete GSM infrastructure in five new geographic areas and network expansion in one existing area, as well as GPRS networks for Delhi and Bangalore. Ericsson will also implement two Intelligent Network (IN) platforms for Bharti's networks in the north and south of India. Bharti's five new GSM areas are in the Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh West, Tamil Nadu and Kerala; network expansion and change out will be carried out in the existing chennai system." more
