3 Telecom Cos Bid For Alltel's Local Phone Lines - Report

AllTel buys CenturyTel's wireless assets

The USA based AllTel has dropped its hostile bid for its rival centurytel and is instead to purchase just the wireless properties owned by centurytel, for US$1.65 billion in cash. AllTel will add more than 700,000 customers and expand its wireless footprint into highly complementary new markets across Arkansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Texas and Wisconsin. AllTel will now have 7.4 million wireless customers in 24 states. Also included in the transaction are minority partnership interests in cellular operations of 2 million proportionate POPs, or potential customers, and PCS licenses covering 1.3 million POPs in Wisconsin and Iowa. more

Alltel steps up takeover battle

The rural USA carrier, Alltel has stepped up its campaign to takeover its smaller rival network, centurytel following its unsolicited US$9.2 billion takeover offer last week. Alltel president Scott Ford has written an open letter to centurytel's chief executive, Glen Post pointing out that the takeover bid had been warmly received by several large investors, saying "I want to urge you and the directors of centurytel once again to listen to your shareholders and begin discussions with Alltel to create the best possible transaction for our respective investors and other constituencies". The merged company would have about 7.2 million cellular subscribers, plus 4.4 million on its land-line operation." more

Alltel launches takeover of rural rival

The USA based telecoms group, Alltel Corporation has made an unsolicited takeover bid for it smaller rival centurytel, valuing the company at US$5.9 billion plus a further US$3 billion in debt. The centurytel board unanimously rejected the offer late yesterday. The combined company would have one of the largest shares of rural subscribers, with around 7.2 million wireless customers and over US$10 billion in annual revenue. There would also be about 4.4 million land-line customers. There is no overlap in the two companies' wireless businesses." more
