Kenya's Subscriber Growth Reaches 40% in 2008

The Kenyan market saw some major developments in the second half of 2008: in Q3, fixed operator Telkom Kenya launched a mobile network, and in the last quarter of the year, Econet Wireless finally managed to get up and running, more than five years after it was first awarded a licence. At the end of 2008, there were 15.90m mobile customers in Kenya. Annual net additions stood at 4.55m, up from 4.08m a year earlier, but proportionate growth fell from 56.0% to 40.1%. Fourth-quarter net additions increased from 0.65m in Q4 07 to 1.37 in Q4 08.  more

Econet Denies MTN Interest in Kenyan Network

Econet Wireless Kenya, which trades under the Yu brandname, has refuted local media reports that South Africa's MTN has offered US$450 for a stake in the company. The reports are "rumors," Chief Executive Officer Srinivasa Iyengar told reporters in Nairobi. The story emerged in Kenya's Standard newspaper.  more

Econet Kenya Signs Up 200,000 Customers in 3 Months

Econet Wireless's newest network, in Kenya is reported to have signed up 200,000 subscribers since it launched last November - and is aiming for one million customers by the middle of the year. Econet Wireless trades under the Yu brand in the country.  more

Econet Wireless Secures Kenyan Network Rollout Funding

New entrant into the Kenyan mobile market, Econet Wireless (trading as Yu) has secured the Sh 35 billion (US$450 million) loan necessary to fund its network rollout. The deal had been delayed by two months after Econet reported difficulties finding credit during the current global economic downturn.  more

Fourth Mobile License Tender for Malawi

The Malawi telecoms regulator, Macra has started advertising for a fourth mobile phone operator, even though the license for the 3rd operator has still not been allocated. The country currently has two operators, celtel Malawi and TNM - and advertised for a third operator last year.  more

Econet Plans $300 Million Spend on Kenyan Network

Econet Wireless's Kenyan subsidiary has said that it is planning to spend upto US$300 million on a network roll out in order to comply with its license obligations which require the company to launch its network by this June.  more

Telkom Kenya Awarded a Mobile Operator License

Kenya's telecoms regulator, the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) has awarded a mobile operator license to Telkom Kenya, which has legalised its existing CDMA based fixed wireless network. The incumbent GSM operators had complained that Telkom Kenya's CDMA network was illegal as the company hadn't paid for an operating license that the regulator had considered to be a fixed wireless service. Since the launch though, Telkom Kenya has marketed the service as a mobile phone network in some areas.  more

Kenya Awards 3rd GSM License - Again

Africa's Econet Wireless says that it has had it's GSM network license in Kenya has been returned to it by the regulator and is now planning to deploy its network early next year. The license was originally awarded in 2003 but revoked shortly afterwards by the then Kenyan Minister of Information and Communication Raphael Tuju who claimed that the company had not complied with shareholder requirements concerning local investor holdings. more

Five Companies Bid for Malawi Mobile License

Malawi's telecoms regulator, Macra has announced in a statement that five companies have applied for the country's third mobile operator license. Three of the bids came from local firms, while the other two came from South Africa's Econet Wireless and USA-based Millennium Global Telecom. more
