Vivendi Confirms - Is in Talks to Buy Zain's African Assets

In a partial contradiction from yesterday's denials by Zain's CEO, Saad al-Barrak, France's Vivendi has formally confirmed that it is in talks with the company over an acquisition. In the statement, the firm said that an acquisition would enable Vivendi to capitalize on its successful experience of developing mobile telephony in Africa.  more

Zain Sale Rumours Boosted by UBS Appointment

In a short statement to the Kuwait Stock Exchange, Zain has confirmed that it has appointed UBS, and other consultants, to conduct a strategy review of its operations. The company did not comment on the ongoing rumours that it is looking to sell its Pan-African assets.  more

Zain Reported to be in Talks for $12 Billion Sale of African Networks

Kuwait based Zain is reported to be considering an offer to sell its African mobile networks to an unnamed French company. The sale of the former celtel assets is estimated to be worth up to US$12 billion, including debt, reports the Dow Jones Newswire, citing the Al Qabas newspaper.  more

Nigeria - Total Market Grows to 63m as Penetration Hits 45%

The Nigerian mobile market's bullish growth showed no signs of abating in Q4 08. Quarterly net additions of 7.15m took the total number of customers over 60m, with a year-end figure of 62.99m, while the annual gain stood at 22.59m. By comparison, Q4 07 saw an increase of 3.39m and the 2007 boost was 11.92m. Meanwhile, the latest figures from Nigerian regulator the NCC show that at the end of January the total had risen to 64.16m.  more

Kenya's Subscriber Growth Reaches 40% in 2008

The Kenyan market saw some major developments in the second half of 2008: in Q3, fixed operator Telkom Kenya launched a mobile network, and in the last quarter of the year, Econet Wireless finally managed to get up and running, more than five years after it was first awarded a licence. At the end of 2008, there were 15.90m mobile customers in Kenya. Annual net additions stood at 4.55m, up from 4.08m a year earlier, but proportionate growth fell from 56.0% to 40.1%. Fourth-quarter net additions increased from 0.65m in Q4 07 to 1.37 in Q4 08.  more

Econet Denies MTN Interest in Kenyan Network

Econet Wireless Kenya, which trades under the Yu brandname, has refuted local media reports that South Africa's MTN has offered US$450 for a stake in the company. The reports are "rumors," Chief Executive Officer Srinivasa Iyengar told reporters in Nairobi. The story emerged in Kenya's Standard newspaper.  more

Nigeria's Bullish Growth Continues in Fourth Quarter

Nigeria's telecoms regulator the NCC has reported customer numbers for the fourth quarter of 2008. The total customer base reached 62.99m at the end of the year having increased by 55.9% annually. On a quarterly basis, net additions stood at 7.15m, only just short of the national and continental record of 7.38m, set in Q2 08.  more

Econet Kenya Signs Up 200,000 Customers in 3 Months

Econet Wireless's newest network, in Kenya is reported to have signed up 200,000 subscribers since it launched last November - and is aiming for one million customers by the middle of the year. Econet Wireless trades under the Yu brand in the country.  more
