Nokia Losing Mobile Internet Traffic Market Share in South Africa
Mobile ad agency, mKhoj has reported that the market share of mobile internet traffic from Nokia handsets in South Africa has dropped from 46% in January to 39% last month. Samsung currently holds 33% of the market, and rose from 20% in January. The iPhone made its entrée into the market, but only contributes 0.06% of the total network traffic, making it a relatively small but growing player. more

South Africa Mobile Penetration Level Breaks the 100% Mark
The South African market broke through the 100% penetration barrier during Q3 08 to finish the quarter on 101.8%. The total market reached 44.51m customers. Annual growth slowed from 24.2% for the 12 months ending 30th September 2007 to 10.7% for the subsequent 12 months, the lowest rate since Q2 02. However, this rate was the same as that recorded in Q2 08, and in real terms annual growth rose quarter-on-quarter, from 4.18m to 4.30m. more

South Africa Mobile Penetration Edges Towards 100%
After a poor first quarter in which there was a net loss of 0.63m customers, the South African market managed positive growth in Q2 with a gain of 0.82m. This took the total customer base to 43.15m, equivalent to a penetration rate of 98.5%. In annual terms, growth stood at 10.7%, less than half the 22.5% recorded in the prior twelve months and, moreover, the lowest rate for six years. more

When South Africa's smallest GSM network operator, Cell C announced its first ever operating profit, at the presentation - CEO, Jeffrey Hedberg dismissed 3G as "hype". He said that while the operator's core network is configured to support 3G services, the company would not invest in the air interface as it does not offer a good return on the investment. more
