DiGi Malaysia Q2 08: Disappointing Customer Growth but Solid Financials

DiGi is MalaysiaĆ's third largest mobile operator by customer numbers behind celcom and market leader Maxis. Between the end of 2001 and the middle of 2007 it saw a steady rise in market share, narrowing the gap between it and celcom from over 15pp to less than 2pp. However, since Q2 07 celcom has responded strongly while DiGi has flagged somewhat, and by the end of Q1 08 celcom had restored a market share lead of more than 4pp, with 31.2% to DiGiĆ's 27.0%.  more

Malaysia Sees Sharp Drop in Mobile Subscribers

Malaysia's prepaid registration programme came to an end in Q4 2006, during which time unregistered SIMs were disconnected from the networks of the country's three operators. In total there were almost 2.4m net disconnections between September and December, which implies that the total number of unregistered SIMs was nearer to 3m if normal organic growth in the quarter is assumed. more

Malaysia Q3 2006 Market Update

Mobile customer growth in Malaysia slowed significantly in Q3 2006 to just 1.5% on a proportionate basis, as a deceleration in growth at number three operator DiGi was compounded by a complete reversal at second placed celcom due to the disconnection of inactives. The national total moved from 20.22m to 20.53m in the three months to 30th September 2006, which is a 17% improvement on 17.54m customers at the end of Q3 2005. more

No Delay to PrePay Registration Deadline

Later this year, Malaysia will start to block any PrePay mobile phone which has not had its ownership registered with the phone networks. Malaysia's telecoms regulator, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has now reiterated its stand that there will be no extension deadline for the registration of all prepaid subscribers. All prepaid subscribers who have failed to meet the deadline of 15 December 2006 will have their lines suspended for a period of 14 days. more

AlanDick Gets Tunnel Vision in Malaysia

AlanDick says that it has developed and installed a unique cellular, emergency service and maintenance radio solution for a motorway tunnel system in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that duals as a massive storm drain during flash floods. The company has developed two separate radio communications systems for the Storm Water Management and Road Tunnel (SMART), being constructed by the Government of Malaysia. It is installing an emergency services and maintenance communications system in the city road tunnel in Kuala Lumpur, along with a multi-operator 2G and 3G cellular communications system for traffic using the motorway. more

Malaysia's GSM network operators announced in a joint statement that they are working together to open their interoperability facility for Multimedia Messaging Services ("MMS"). more

Full inter-network SMS to come to Malaysia

Malaysia's five cellular networks have issued a joint statement to say that they will all support interopperator SMS by the end of next month. "This inter-operator SMS will undoubtedly provide greater synergy and growth for the country's telecommunications industry," they said in the joint statement. Two local networks, celcom and DiGi Telecommunications are already offering SMS between their networks, which apparently breached a "gentlemen's agreement" not to launch the service until all the networks were ready." more

Malaysian network fury over SMS interconection

The Malaysia Business Times newspaper has reported that the two Malaysian GSM networks, celcom and DiGi have broken a gentlemen's agreement by offering SMS interconnection before the other networks were ready. A rival network, Maxis Communications is understood to arranging a meeting between the various networks in the country to negotiate a speedy settlement to the issue. The newspaper reported a local government official as saying that the government had wanted to offer SMS interconnection between all the networks at once, but that celcom and DiGi had launched early." more

Two Malaysian networks to allow SMS interoperability

Two Malaysian GSM networks, celcom and DiGi Telecommunications have signed a SMS interconnection agreement. Under the agreement between both operators, revenue will accrue to the originating network operator on a 'sender keeper' basis. "This initiative with DiGi is just the first step and we are pursuing futher inter-operator SMS tie-ups with other operators. We are confident that it will be well received by customers and would be the catalyst for all mobile operators to link their SMS services with one another," celcom group executive vice president Bistamam Ramli said in a statement yesterday." more
