Consolidation in Romania as Cosmote buys Zapp

Greece's Cosmote Group confirmed earlier rumours and has signed a deal to buy Romania's Telemobil (Zapp) for a total consideration of around EUR205 million. The consideration for the shares of Zapp is estimated at approximately EUR61 million  (equity value), while Cosmote will also assume the debt and other liabilities of Zapp, mainly concerning 3G and CDMA network roll out, estimated at approximately EUR 146 million.  more

Cosmote Closer to Buying Romanian 3G Operator

Greece's Cosmote Group is reported to have agreed on a price of EUR 200 million to buy a smaller rival network in Romania, Zapp, which is owned by the Saudi Oger group. Cosmote already owns a mobile network in the country, but lacks the 3G license which Zapp has.  more

Romanian CDMA Operator, Zapp Plans UMTS Rollout

During a press conference held last month, Chris Bataillard, CEO of Romania's Zapp announced that their 2100 Mhz network will be functional by June 30th, providing mobile high-speed data services based on ZTEÃ's UMTS/HSDPA solutions.  more

Qualcomm Sells Stake in Romanian CDMA Operator

Saudi Oger has brought out its partner in the Romanian cdma450 operator, Telemobil - which trades under the brandname, Zapp. Saudi Oger, a group controlled by the family of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri, is already one of Telemobil's shareholders through the investment fund Omnia Holdings, which owns 45.76% in Inquam, Telemobil's majority shareholder. Qualcomm also holds 45.76%.  more

Fixed CDMA Phone From Romanian Operator

The Romanian based CDMA operator, Zapp Mobile has launched a "fixed line" service that offers a conventional landline style handset, while relying on the company's CDMA network for connectivity. The service is available with the Z1110 phone, the first fixed wireless terminal from Zapp. Z1110 has a built-in high-speed modem (153.6 kbps) and can be connected to a computer via a USB cable for Internet access, browsing and data transfers. more

Expanding CDMA450 coverage in Romania

Romania's Zapp has recently started Phase 4 of the expansion and upgrade of its cdma450 voice and data network, with investments in equipment totaling US$60 million. This investment will lead to the coverage of 78% of the Romanian territory and 90% of the population, compared to the current coverage of 70% of the territory and 80% of the population. Thus, the Zapp network will cover 240 cities, 6,300 km of national roads and 1,500 localities. more

Vietnam expanding its CDMA450 coverage

Vietnam Power Telecom (VP Telecom) has selected Lucent for its phase II cdma450 network expansion project. Lucent and VP Telecom have already completed the deployment of a wireless network to provide voice and high-speed data services based on cdma450 technology -- Lucent's CDMA2000 1X solution for the 450 MHz spectrum band -- in the northern provinces of Vietnam. more

Improving indoor CDMA coverage

Israel's Cellvine says that it has begun commercial deployment of its in-building coverage and capacity enhancement solutions at multiple locations for the Romanian CDMA340 operator, Zapp Mobile. cdma450 networks tend to have superior propagation characteristics, providing operators with the opportunity to cover wider geographic areas at both lower CapEx and operational costs. However, this technology requires greater in-building deployment in office buildings, underground facilities, shopping malls and tunnels where it is difficult for the cellular signals to penetrate. more

CDMA450 trials begin in Brazil

Lucent Technologies has announced it is conducting a trial of commercial cdma450 technology in Brazil in conjunction with Anatel, the federal communications agency in Brazil. The trial is part of Anatel's "Digital Inclusion and Universal Internet Access" project, an effort to explore technologies that can help bridge the "digital divide" in the country. more

Lucent to support CDMA at 450Mhz

Lucent Technologies says that it will start to support CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology at 450 MHz spectrum - a spectrum band available to support mobile services in Eastern Europe and other markets worldwide.
