Wireless Backhaul to Go Next-Generation by 2012
Based on IDC's research of the Asia/Pacific (including Japan) carrier network equipment market, IDC predicts that there will be over 3 million basestations and over 1.8 million cell sites in by 2012, representing a growth of 24.3% and 10.7% respectively from 2008. Approximately half of these sites will be connected to fiber through Carrier Ethernet. Urban 3G/High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) basestations will be linked to fiber by 2011 in most markets in the region. more

After failing to restructure the company, Sweden based Nordisk Mobiltelefon Sverige has announced that it is filing for bankruptcy. The company was building up operations and rolling out proprietary cellular networks in Northern Europe based on cdma2000 networks in the 450Mhz bands. more

Global GSM Subscriber Growth Rate to Slow in 2008
ABI Research is forecasting that global GSM subscriber growth to slow from a year-on-year rate of over 22% in 2006/07 to 14% in 2008/09, mainly due to the increased migration of subscribers to UMTS 3G technologies. UMTS (including HSDPA) experienced a nearly 83% year-on-year growth rate in 2006/07. ABI Research expects global GSM subscriber numbers to show a negative growth rate starting in 2013, as by then GSM will become less attractive compared to the cheaper 3G services; there will also be losses due to the proliferation of mobile WiMAX and 4G networks. more

Global Mobile Phone Subscribers to Reach 4.5 Billion by 2012
According to MIC (Market Intelligence Center), an ICT industry research institute based in Taipei, global mobile phone subscribers hit 3.1 billion in 2007, thanks mainly to the continuing increase of prepaid subscribers with double SIM cards and corporate clients in the US and European markets. With the global mobile phone penetration rate reaching approximately half of the global population, growth momentum of global subscribers is expected to slow down after 2008. more

Over 90 Million 4G Subscribers Worldwide by 2013
The total number of 4G subscribers worldwide, including both LTE and WiMAX, is expected to exceed 90 million in 2013, but a number of milestones must be passed en route, according to a new forecast from ABI Research. At the end of 4Q 2007, says the firm, there were nearly 3.4 billion mobile subscribers worldwide, with 2.7 billion on GSM/EDGE/GPRS networks. more

Verizon Wireless Confirms LTE for its Network Evolution
A few months after Vodafone's Arun Sarin said that he expects the US Verizon Wireless to adopt 3GPP LTE for its network evolution, the company has now outlined its plans to develop and deploy its fourth generation mobile broadband network using LTE.
