Cell Base Station Market Retracts Dramatically as 3G Rollout Frenzy Cools

After many years of rapid growth, the worldwide cellular base station market revenue will decline 22% in 2009, with shipments falling from the high levels of the 3G rollout frenzy of the last few years, reports In-Stat. Declining base station shipments are one clear reason for the revenue decline. However, intense competition from Chinese equipment manufacturers ZTE and Huawei have pressured base station selling prices, as operators demand that infrastructure manufacturers decrease costs.  more

Japanese Operators Exceed 100 Million 3G Subscribers

Qualcomm says that Japan's mobile operators have exceeded 100 million 3G CDMA subscribers as of April 2009, citing data announced by the Telecommunications Carriers Association in Japan.  more

ZTE, Other 3G Device Providers Play Active Role in Deploying 3G Networks in China

CCID, a research firm in China disclosed recently in an industry report which predicted that the rapid deployment of 3G networks in China will eventually result in the creation of about 660,000 3G subscriber lines by Q3 this year. This will make China the country with the largest 3G network construction in the world.  more

Qualcomm Chipset Supports Simultaneous Voice and Data Usage

Qualcomm has introduced the industry's first chipset solution for Smartphones supporting cdma2000 1xEV-DO Rev. B and Simultaneous Voice-Data Operation (SV-DO), as well as multi-carrier HSPA+ and LTE. The MSM8960 chipset is scheduled to sample in mid-2010.  more

South Korean W-CDMA base exceeds EV-DO in fourth quarter

All three South Korean operators have now reported their Q4 08 results. The South Korean market is one of the most stable in the world, and it was thus no surprise that market shares remained unchanged both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year, with SK Telecom (SKT) on 50.5%, KT Freetel (KTF) on 31.5% and LG Telecom (LGT) on 18.0%. In fact, barring a minor blip in June, there was no change in market shares on a monthly basis either throughout 2008.  more

Qualcomm has introduced its second-generation embedded Gobi module, delivering multi-mode 3G mobile Internet access on either HSPA or cdma2000 EV-DO networks in markets around the world. The Gobi2000 module offers a wide range of enhancements, including support for additional radio frequencies, increased data speeds, enhanced GPS functionality and support for additional operating systems such as Windows 7.  more
