Israel's Pelephone 3G base Surpasses 1 Million Mark
Pelephone is the third largest of IsraelÃ's four networks, but it was the fastest growing in Q3 08, both in real terms and proportionately. It added 62k customers in the quarter compared to 40k for market leader Cellcom and 36k for second-placed Partner, and its proportionate quarterly growth rate stood at 2.4% compared to 1.3% for both its rivals. At the end of the quarter its active customer base was just short of 2.70m. Nearest rival Partner had 2.88m, which means that its lead over Pelephone was below 200k for the first time in three years. more

3G now Almost Four-Fifths of Japan's Subscriber Base
SoftbankÃ's run of market-leading performances for monthly net additions has reached an astounding 16 months, with August the fourth month in a row in which it was the only operator to record a six-figure gain. It did not quite match the level of dominance achieved in June and July, when it took more than half of the total net additions in the market, but the August share of 42.2% was nonetheless impressive. In real terms, SoftbankÃ's monthly gain was 163.6k, which took its total subscriber base to 19.49m. more

Caribbean & LatAm - 80% now GSM as CDMA suffers record loss
The rise of GSM technology in the Caribbean & Latin American mobile market continued apace in Q3 2007 as a record 25.5m new connections were made. With only 17m net additions in total across the continent in the period, networks of other technologies had to give up a considerable number of customers to swell GSM's ranks to such an extent. The region's AMPS/TDMA networks lost 4.66m customers in the third quarter to end September with 14.3m - less than half the number registered a year earlier. more

North America Q3 - GSM customer numbers top 100m
GSM customer numbers in North America topped 100m in early September to reach 100.52m by the end of the third quarter, 1.97m up over the three months. Connections to networks operating using the global standard have more than doubled in number over the last three years, having stood at just under 50m at the end of Q3 2004. Over that time-frame GSM has been without doubt the fastest growing technology in the North American market; however, over the last year it has in fact been the slowest growing. In the year to 30th September, GSM customer numbers rose by 9.7%, which is the lowest ever recorded growth rate for the technology, and the first time the annual figure has dropped below 10%. more

CDMA Increases in MEA Region - but Still Marginal
Whilst it still accounted for 97.15% of the continental customer base at the end of the year, the importance of GSM technology in the Middle East & Africa region decreased in every quarter of 2006, as customers - particularly in the Middle East - adopted new generation W-CDMA services. In aggregate the two technologies held up better, but there was still a loss of market share as the overall contribution of the GSM family declined from 97.99% to 97.79%. more
Russia & Central Asia Q4 2006 - GSM Slips Slightly
GSM dominates the mobile market in Russia & Central Asia, with all but 1.4m of the region's 171.7m mobile connections at the end of 2006 being accounted for by the global standard technology. There was, however, a very small shift in the trend in Q4 2006: the proportion of the customer base made up of GSM customers - which has been growing steadily over the years - actually fell. more
