Japanese Operators Exceed 100 Million 3G Subscribers

Qualcomm says that Japan's mobile operators have exceeded 100 million 3G CDMA subscribers as of April 2009, citing data announced by the Telecommunications Carriers Association in Japan.  more

3G now Almost Four-Fifths of Japan's Subscriber Base

SoftbankÃ's run of market-leading performances for monthly net additions has reached an astounding 16 months, with August the fourth month in a row in which it was the only operator to record a six-figure gain. It did not quite match the level of dominance achieved in June and July, when it took more than half of the total net additions in the market, but the August share of 42.2% was nonetheless impressive. In real terms, SoftbankÃ's monthly gain was 163.6k, which took its total subscriber base to 19.49m.  more

GSM and W-CDMA claim 82% of Asia Pacific market

W-CDMA continued to be Asia's fastest growing technology in Q3 2006 with a proportionate increase in customer numbers of 15.7% over the three months. However, whilst the proportionate growth rate was a new record low - naturally declining as the technology gradually becomes more established on the continent - in absolute terms Q3 2006 was a record quarter for W-CDMA, with a net 5.5m new customers adopting the technology, compared with 4.0m in Q3 2005. more

KDDI to Introduce World's First EV-DO Rev. A and BCMCS Mobile Services

Japan's KDDI has announced a world first expansion of its CDMA2000 1x EV-DO system, with an 'EV-DO Rev. A' data infrastructure to roll out from December 2006, with BCMCS (Broadcast and Multicast Services) to start from September. The companies launched the CDMA2000 1x EV-DO (EV-DO Rev. 0) standard in November 2003 as the CDMA 1X WIN service for au mobile phones. more

Motorola wins Japanese CDMA upgrade contract

Motorola has received orders for its CDMA2000 1X SoftSwitch from Japan's KDDI. The SoftSwitch provided by Motorola will be used as the core switch in KDDI's CDMA2000 1X network. In April 2002, KDDI began its nationwide deployment of CDMA2000 1X, a 3G cellular service, on Motorola's cdmaOne network. Since then, Motorola has played a vital role in building KDDI's wireless mobile network as the sole vendor of CDMA2000 1X RAN systems. more

Motorola wins Japanese CDMA contract

Motorola has received a US$150 million expansion order to deploy its CDMA2000 1X Radio Access Network (RAN) system for Japan's KDDI. The Motorola RAN system is scheduled for deployment beginning in fiscal 2006, primarily for services in the 2 GHz band, where KDDI has already begun to roll out services. The order represents the first stage in a broader plan for Motorola to provide equipment and services for KDDI's continued deployment of CDMA2000 1X. more

10 million new CDMA2000 subscribers in three months

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) has reported that 10 CDMA2000 networks were deployed and more than 10 million new CDMA2000 users were added in the third quarter 2003. At the end of September, there were 71 commercial CDMA2000 networks in 36 countries on 6 continents serving more than 64.5 million subscribers. more

1xEV-DO network launching in Japan

Japan's KDDI Corp. is planning to launch a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network in metropolitan Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka next month. The 3G network, marketed under the name CDMA 1X WIN, will be available to customers beginning November 28, 2003. CDMA 1X WIN represents the first commercial CDMA2000 1xEV-DO deployment in Japan and KDDI will be the sixth operator worldwide to deploy a commercial CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network, joining operators in the United States, South Korea and Brazil. more

3G service market to reach 69 million subscribers by 2007

According to IDC Japan's new study, the 3G service market in Japan is expected to reach 69 million subscribers in 2007, and will account for 77.6% of the 88.9 million subscriptions in the entire cellular phone/PHS market. The 3G market is also expected to be worth US$54 billion in terms of revenue, accounting for 81.4% of the total market. The ratio of data communication charges in the total monthly usage fee for mobile phone services will increase to 26.1% in 2007. more
