Japanese Operators Exceed 100 Million 3G Subscribers
Qualcomm says that Japan's mobile operators have exceeded 100 million 3G CDMA subscribers as of April 2009, citing data announced by the Telecommunications Carriers Association in Japan. more

South Korean W-CDMA base exceeds EV-DO in fourth quarter
All three South Korean operators have now reported their Q4 08 results. The South Korean market is one of the most stable in the world, and it was thus no surprise that market shares remained unchanged both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year, with SK Telecom (SKT) on 50.5%, KT Freetel (KTF) on 31.5% and LG Telecom (LGT) on 18.0%. In fact, barring a minor blip in June, there was no change in market shares on a monthly basis either throughout 2008. more

Israel's Pelephone 3G base Surpasses 1 Million Mark
Pelephone is the third largest of IsraelÃ's four networks, but it was the fastest growing in Q3 08, both in real terms and proportionately. It added 62k customers in the quarter compared to 40k for market leader Cellcom and 36k for second-placed Partner, and its proportionate quarterly growth rate stood at 2.4% compared to 1.3% for both its rivals. At the end of the quarter its active customer base was just short of 2.70m. Nearest rival Partner had 2.88m, which means that its lead over Pelephone was below 200k for the first time in three years. more

CDMA2000 Finds Opportunities in Europe, Russia and Emerging Markets in the 450 MHz Band
The CDMA Development Group (CDG) says that CDMA450 is rapidly expanding across all regions, and that 126 operators in 65 countries have deployed or are planning to deploy CDMA450 services; 105 operators in 58 countries are already offering commercial services to more than 15 million people, and 21 operators are trialing or deploying CDMA450 in 8 more countries. more

3G now Almost Four-Fifths of Japan's Subscriber Base
SoftbankÃ's run of market-leading performances for monthly net additions has reached an astounding 16 months, with August the fourth month in a row in which it was the only operator to record a six-figure gain. It did not quite match the level of dominance achieved in June and July, when it took more than half of the total net additions in the market, but the August share of 42.2% was nonetheless impressive. In real terms, SoftbankÃ's monthly gain was 163.6k, which took its total subscriber base to 19.49m. more

Iusacell - Disappointing Customer Growth One Year on From Merger
It is now more than one year since Iusacell, MexicoÃ's third largest operator by customer numbers, merged with rival Unefon. In operational terms, the performance of the merged network has been disappointing, with annual net additions of only 130k, equivalent to just 3.3% growth. This compares to net additions of 583k and proportionate growth of 17.5% for the prior twelve months on a pro forma basis. IusacellÃ's total customer base at the end of June 2008 was 4.05m compared to 3.92m a year earlier, with market share down 0.8pp at 5.5%. more

South Korea's KTF Reports 5 Million 3G Subscribers
South Korea's KT Freetel (KTF) has reportedly signed up its 5 millionth 3G subscriber - since the service launched 14 months ago. The company said that its 3G tariff, "Show" continues to draw subscribers at a rapid pace, adding more than 2 million users over the past four months. The net increase in "Show" users was 609,185 in March, the largest ever. more

Global Mobile Phone Subscribers to Reach 4.5 Billion by 2012
According to MIC (Market Intelligence Center), an ICT industry research institute based in Taipei, global mobile phone subscribers hit 3.1 billion in 2007, thanks mainly to the continuing increase of prepaid subscribers with double SIM cards and corporate clients in the US and European markets. With the global mobile phone penetration rate reaching approximately half of the global population, growth momentum of global subscribers is expected to slow down after 2008. more

Taiwan Operator Aims to Double 3G Subscriber Base
Taiwan's Vibo Telecom expects to resume 3G handset subsidies to help drive its subscriber base and reach its break-even target for the end of this year. The company aims to double its subscriber base to 1.2 million customers during 2008. more

Caribbean & LatAm - 80% now GSM as CDMA suffers record loss
The rise of GSM technology in the Caribbean & Latin American mobile market continued apace in Q3 2007 as a record 25.5m new connections were made. With only 17m net additions in total across the continent in the period, networks of other technologies had to give up a considerable number of customers to swell GSM's ranks to such an extent. The region's AMPS/TDMA networks lost 4.66m customers in the third quarter to end September with 14.3m - less than half the number registered a year earlier. more
