Caribbean & Latin America - CDMA Enters its "Sunset" Phase

The technology story in the Caribbean & Latin America (CALA) region is simple: most US based technologies are in full retreat, while the international GSM/W-cdma standards are proliferating. During the quarter, the number of customers connected to AMPS, TDMA and cdma systems declined by 4.4m overall, bringing the number of disconnections so far this year to 19.9m, or 5.2% of the starting base.  more

Venezuela Market Penetration Level Passes 100%

The number of mobile connections in Venezuela stood at 26.67m at the end of Q3 08, with penetration edging over 100% during the quarter to finish on 100.6%. It thus became the third South American nation to reach 100% after Suriname and Argentina, although French overseas departement French Guiana also joined the club during the quarter with 100.5% at the end of September. (Uruguay has almost certainly joined this group at the time of writing, having reached 99.0% at the end of Q3.)  more

Brazil's Penetration Set to Surpass 80% as Total Market Reaches 140m

Brazilian penetration is racing upwards, with a 14.0pp gain in the twelve months ending 30th September 2008 taking the figure to 73.2%. This compares to an 8.3pp gain in the prior twelve months. At the time of writing, penetration is likely to be approaching 80%, and although it is common for markets to slow down as 100% penetration is neared, a penetration rate in excess of 90% by the end of 2009 is a possibility.  more

Jamaican Operator Aiming for 3G Launch in November

Cable and Wireless Jamaica (C&WJ) expects to launch its 3G network on 15th November, according to the company's senior vice-president of business sales, Leroy Reid. Speaking at a local conference, he said that the company would have a phased rollout initially in the main business district along with St Catherine and St Thomas.  more

Millicom Profits Rise - Plans Cuts in CAPEX for 2009

Millicom International has reported a 53% increase in its subscribers for Q3 08 versus Q3 07, bringing total subscribers to 30.6 million - along with a 27% increase in revenues for Q3 08 to US$869 million. Net profit for Q3 08 rose by 17% to $161 million, while BITDA increased by 25% to $369 million.  more

Jamaican Operator to Adopt Claro Brand

Jamaican mobile operator, MiPhone is to rebrand as Claro from Thursday this week - matching the branding from its parent company, America Movil. Oceanic Digital Jamaica, the parent company of MiPhone was brought by America Movil last year for US$70 million.  more

Four Companies Interested in Jamaican WiMAX Licenses

Four companies have expressed an interest in securing a WiMAX license in Jamaica, although only three licenses are available. An unnamed source at the Spectrum Management Authority told the local Jamaica Gleaner newspaper that while Digicel Jamaica is one of the bidders, the other three companies could not be identified.  more
