Mongolia Gets HSPA Network Upgrade
Mongolian operator MobiCom has launched a HSPA upgrade, with the network supplied by Ericsson. The launch enables MobiCom to introduce mobile broadband services to its subscribers across Mongolia, starting in the capital Ulaanbaatar where about 40 percent of the country's 3 million inhabitants live. more

1.45 Million BWA/WiMAX Subscribers Added in 2008
Worldwide, approximately 1.45 million BWA/WiMAX subscribers were added during 2008, while the Wcdma subscriber base increased by more than 90 million. The average quarter-over-quarter subscriber growth rate in 2008 was 21.5%, according to the 7th issue of the 4GCounts Quarterly Report from Maravedis. more

New Zealand telco, Digital Island says that it has signed a MVNO deal with Telecom New Zealand to add mobile phone services to its portfolio. The firm will carry out a two month pilot with existing customers beginning in April, followed by a full commercial service from July. more

China Unicom Selects Alcatel-Lucent to Deploy 3G Networks in 14 Provinces
Alcatel-Lucent says that it has been selected by China Unicom to deploy 3G W-cdma networks in 14 Chinese provinces. Initial network deployments in the cities of Tianjin, Baoding, Wenzhou, Taizhou, Guiyang and Guilin are expected to be completed in May, 2009. more

Zain Invests in Moroccan Mobile Operator
Kuwait based Zain has announced plans to take an equity stake equivalent to 15.5% in Moroccan mobile network operator, Wana. Under the terms of the investment, Zain is setting up a 50:50 joint venture with the Al Ajial Investment Fund Holding, and it is that joint-venture which will take a 31% stake in the firm for US$324 million. more

Alcatel-Lucent Wins Indian GSM-CDMA Contract
Alcatel-Lucent says that it has won a seven-year contract from India's Tata Teleservices to expand their cdma /GSM network in 22 states pan India, covering close to 60 million subscribers. No financial details were provided though - or any indication of the scale of the contract. more

BSNL Launches 3G Services in 11 Cities
Ericsson has issued an update on its Sept 2007 contract win from India's BSNL - and says it achieved the country's biggest simultaneous launch of 3G services to date, across 11 major cities. As part of its roll-out strategy, BSNL plans to launch 3G services using Wcdma/HSPA technology across more than 700 cities in the first phase. more

iPhone in China: China Mobile or China Unicom?

The iPhone distribution negotiations between Apple and China Mobile were first
reported in 2007. While many expected to see the two shake hands, no deal has
yet been announced and it is now rumoured that Apple will partner with China
Unicom instead. What is interesting is how the competitive environment will
influence any cooperation.
