First Active Handover Between LTE and CDMA Networks Demonstrated
LG and Nortel have demonstrated the world's first 3GPP standards compliant active handover of a data transmission between a LTE network and a cdma network. Inter-technology handover allowing mobile users the ability to move between LTE and cdma networks without losing data connectivity means that operators can run these networks concurrently without impacting services. This will help to ensure that users have full network coverage while taking advantage of LTE speeds, wherever initially available. more

Alcatel-Lucent Wins Chinese Contracts Worth $1.7 Billion
Alcatel-Lucent has inked two framework agreements valued US$1.7 billion in total with China Mobile and China Telecom, to provide network upgrades, integration and maintenance services in 2009. The agreements were secured through Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent's Chinese company. more

Qualcomm Slips into Second-Quarter Loss on Broadcom Settlement
Now that the Broadcom patent issue has been finalised, Qualcomm has published its delayed quarterly financial results, which recorded a loss due to that Broadcom settlement. Qualcomm reported second quarter net loss of US$289 million, compared to profit of US$766 million a year ago. Revenues dropped to US$2.46 billion, compared to US$2.61 billion in the prior year and US$2.52 billion in the prior quarter. more

Verizon Wireless Reported to be in Talks for CDMA Based iPhone
Verizon is reported to be in advanced talks with Apple to launch a cdma version of the iPhone handset. The mobile network operator entered into "high-level" discussions with Apple management a few months ago, when CEO Steve Jobs was overseeing day-to-day business, sources told USA Today. The sources declined to be named because they aren't authorized to speak publicly. more

Qualcomm and Broadcom Wave a Paper and Declare "Peace For Our Time"
The acrimonious patent battle between Qualcomm and Broadcom is finally over. The two firms have entered into a settlement and multi-year patent agreement, which will result in the dismissal with prejudice of all litigation between the companies, including all patent infringement claims in the International Trade Commission and U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, as well as the withdrawal by Broadcom of its complaints to the European Commission and the Korea Fair Trade Commission. more

1.45 Million BWA/WiMAX Subscribers Added in 2008
Worldwide, approximately 1.45 million BWA/WiMAX subscribers were added during 2008, while the Wcdma subscriber base increased by more than 90 million. The average quarter-over-quarter subscriber growth rate in 2008 was 21.5%, according to the 7th issue of the 4GCounts Quarterly Report from Maravedis. more

Nigeria - Total Market Grows to 63m as Penetration Hits 45%
The Nigerian mobile market's bullish growth showed no signs of abating in Q4 08. Quarterly net additions of 7.15m took the total number of customers over 60m, with a year-end figure of 62.99m, while the annual gain stood at 22.59m. By comparison, Q4 07 saw an increase of 3.39m and the 2007 boost was 11.92m. Meanwhile, the latest figures from Nigerian regulator the NCC show that at the end of January the total had risen to 64.16m. more

Alcatel-Lucent Offers Converged RAN for CDMA Networks Migrating to LTE
Alcatel-Lucent says that it has expanded its wireless networking portfolio to inlcude a Converged RAN" (radio access network) which enables mobile service providers to offer both 3G cdma and LTE services using a common network infrastructure. One of the key elements of the Converged RAN is the software defined radio (SDR) technology which has been available on the current Alcatel-Lucent base stations for a number of years already. more

Huawei Wins CDMA Contract from Cox Communications
Huawei has confirmed reports which emerged last week that it has selected to provide its end to end cdma solution and services to Cox Communications in the USA. Cox, the third-largest cable provider in the United States, is planning to launch a 3G wireless network utilizing Huawei's LTE-ready SingleRAN solution and 3900 Series base stations. more
