China Telecom Q1 Profits Down 27%

China Telecom has reported a first quarter profit of RMB 4.7 billion (US$686 million), a 27% drop from the RMB 6.47 billion a year earlier. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell 3.8% to RMB 22.2 billion and the EBITDA margin decreased to 43.6% from 52.1% the previous year. more

Rwandan Operator Signs up 120,000 Customers in Three Weeks

Rwandan mobile operator, Rwandatel says that it signed up 120,000 new subscribers in the three weeks since it switched on its 3G and GSM network. The firm already operated a cdma network but decided to switch to a GSM based 3G service following its acquisition by Libya's LAP Green Networks last year.  more

Court Blocks Philippines 3G License Award

The Philippines telecoms regulator, the NTC has been ordered by a court of appeals to stop awarding 3G licenses. The ruling comes from an appeal filed by Bayan Telecommunications which had lost an earlier application for a 3G license.  more

Rwanda mobile operator launches GSM, 3G network

APA-Kigali (Rwanda) Rwanda's oldest telecommunication operator, Rwandatel, Friday launched the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and 3G network for its mobile telephone, replacing its cdma (Code Division Multiple Access) platform, as it prepares for a cut-throat competition with MTN Rwanda, its main challenger.  more

Qualcomm Shows Off Rural Mobile PC Base

Qualcomm has launched an alternative PC - which it aims to make available for rural and emerging markets where landline access to the internet is not available. The company says that its Kayak PC alternative fills the niche that exists between desktop PCs, which normally require landlines or separate accessories for connectivity, and Internet-capable wireless devices.  more

China to Allocate Additional Spectrum to 3G Networks

It has been reported that China is planning to allocate additional radio spectrum to the homegrown 3G service, by taking it from the low-cost XiaoLingTong local area wireless service. Xie Feipo, from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that the ministry had asked fixed-line operators to return the PHS radio spectrum so it could be reassigned to the TD-Scdma network.  more

China Unicom Starts 3G Trial

China Unicom is reported to have started a trial Wcdma based network in Baoding City in northern China's Hebei Province. Industry sources told the Interfax news agency that the trials have already commenced.  more
