Handset Shipments Expected to Drop 20% in 2009

Huawei delivers China Unicom' s first 3G network in Zhengzhou

Huawei says that it has deployed China' s first Wcdma commercial network for China Unicom in Zhengzhou, Henan province, China. In China Unicom' s Phase One UMTS tender, Huawei was awarded the largest market share of over 30 percent based on number of transceiver to be deployed.  more

3G-4G to Account for 30% of Global Wireless Subscriptions by 2013

At the end of 2008, only 11% of worldwide wireless subscriptions were 3G. By the end of 2013, the percentage of 3G and 4G subscriptions will reach 30%, reports In-Stat. This trend is reflected in fourth quarter 2008 wireless infrastructure contract awards.  more

China Unicom Confirms in Talks with Apple of iPhone Sales

China Unicom's chairman Chang Xiaobing has confirmed that the company is in talks with Apple over an option to sell the iPhone handset in the country. He did not elaborate on the talks, citing confidentiality agreements.   more

EDGE Continues to Dominate New Base Station Deployments in 2009

EDGE will dominate new base station deployments in 2009 with over 40% of new base station deployments, reports In-Stat. The slowdown in the global economy is having an effect on EDGE base station deployments as operators push out deployments. There will be a slight decline in new EDGE base station deployments from 2008 to 2009, resulting in 2008 being the zenith of EDGE deployments.  more

WiMAX Has Early Lead Over LTE in Wireless 4G Race
