Mongolia Gets HSPA Network Upgrade
Mongolian operator MobiCom has launched a HSPA upgrade, with the network supplied by Ericsson. The launch enables MobiCom to introduce mobile broadband services to its subscribers across Mongolia, starting in the capital Ulaanbaatar where about 40 percent of the country's 3 million inhabitants live. more

Telecom New Zealand Announces WCDMA Network Launch
Telecom New Zealand has announced the early launch of its Wcdma overlay of its existing cdma network - for the 13th May. CEO Paul Reynolds said the development of the Telecom XT Mobile Network had progressed extremely well and the service will be operational across the country from launch day. more

New GSM Network to Launch in Vietnam
Hutchison Telecom has announced that its Vietnamese operation, Vietnamobile will launch its GSM services tomorrow ( 9th April). Vietnamobile, the partnership between Hutchison Telecom and Hanoi Telecom Joint Stock Company, will launch its service over its GSM network with footprint present at 64 provinces in Vietnam. more

Ericsson Wins 4-Year 3G Upgrade Contract in Turkey
Turkish operator Avea has signed a four year contract with Ericsson for a Wcdma/HSPA upgrade. Under the agreement, Ericsson will be one of the main suppliers and will integrate and deploy Wcdma/HSPA radio access and packet core networks, as well as a complete mobile-backhaul solution based on microwave transmission and optical transport. more

ZTE Aims to be a Top-5 Phone Manufacturer This Year
China's ZTE is close to breaking into the top-5 of global handset manufacturers after it saw handset shipments jump by 40% in 2008 to reach 45 million units, according to the Taiwan based DigiTimes publication. The company had set itself a target of gaining a top-5 placement by 2011, but did accept that shrinking market share in competitors could bring that date forward. more

Smartphone sales buck the recession
A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession. more

Ericsson Wins Chinese 3G Network Contract
Ericsson says that it has been selected by China Unicom to supply Wcdma networks and services for 15 Chinese provinces. Ericsson, along with its partners, was awarded contracts to supply Wcdma core and/or radio access network systems in 15 provinces, including Beijing, Jilin, Jiangsu, Hubei, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Anhui, Henan, Hainan, Shanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, Shandong, Guangdong and Hunan. more

Recession isn't holding back mobile broadband subscribers
Market research firm Infonetics Research released the fourth quarter (4Q08) edition of its Mobile Broadband Cards, Routers, Services, and Subscribers report last week. The report found that worldwide, the number of mobile broadband subscribers (including W- cdma/HSPA and cdma2000/EV-DO) jumped 125% in 2008 over 2007, hitting 210.5 million, and are expected to top 1 billion by 2013. more
