Telecom New Zealand has announced the early launch of its Wcdma overlay of its existing cdma network - for the 13th May. CEO Paul Reynolds said the development of the Telecom XT Mobile Network had progressed extremely well and the service will be operational across the country from launch day. more

Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract
Motorola says that it has won a W-cdma contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-cdma radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's GSM and W-cdma networks. more

Tecore Networks has announced that Ningiq - a joint venture of ASTAC and OTZ, two telephone cooperatives providing mobile communications services in Northern Alaska - has again selected Tecore's products to offer converged GSM and cdma voice and data services throughout the region. Ningiq first deployed Tecore systems starting in August 2007, and has now followed that installation with an expansion order that more than doubles the number of sites served. more

Smart-Jamming for Mobile Phones in US Prison
Tecore Networks says that it has deployed its Intelligent Network Access Controller (IntelliNAC) to address the growing problem of illegal cell phone use by prison inmates in an unnamed U.S. locality. While restricting the localized use of unknown cellular devices within the IntelliNAC coverage area, approved prison personnel remain able to access the commercial cellular network service within the prison grounds as well as external to the prison through their existing cellular subscriptions. more
