Qiao Xing Mobile to Boost 3G Phone Development Staff
China's Qiao Xing Mobile says that it plans to accelerate its 3G mobile phone R&D by adding 200 engineers to its existing R&D team in Beijing in 2009. Nortel Software Upgrade Reduces GSM Base Station Power Consumption
Nortel is launching a "Smart Power Management" software platform that the company says helps reduce radio network power consumption in GSM networks and delivers significant energy and cost-savings for mobile operators. Power reductions that can be achieved through this solution were demonstrated in a trial conducted in February 2009 with China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) - the parent company of Hong Kong listed China Mobile. more

China Telecom Offers Free Mobile Internet Access as Prepares for 3G Launch
China Telecom, which recently took over the cdma network formerly owned by China Unicom has started offering free mobile internet access as it prepares to roll out its 3G network upgrade in the capital city. The South China Morning Post reported that new subscribers will get between 20 and 50 megabytes of free internet usage per month, depending on their tariff. more

Nortel Completes LTE-TDD Wireless Demo in China
Nortel says that it has successfully completed the first end-to-end video streaming session using a Time Division Duplex (TDD)-based LTE network, working with commercial grade LTE Base Station and device prototypes in China. Wireless Data Roaming Wins Gold During Beijing Olympics
With athletes and sports fans pouring in from all over the world to attend the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, wireless data roaming turned in a gold medal performance according to data released today from data roaming exchange provider, Aicent. Data from Aicent's roaming eXchange services shows a surge in wireless data roaming traffic exceeding 40 percent over the same period of days the month before. This increase in roaming traffic resulted in more than 332 GB of data being exchanged between 225 mobile operators in 106 different countries on the Aicent network. more
