China's CCID Consulting has reported that with demand still affected by various setbacks that occurred in the first half of 2009, growth in the domestic mobile phone market, in particular the GSM mobile phone sector, has remained sluggish since late last year. A lack of innovative technology and new design in mobile phone products in 2009, as well the anticipated release of 3G mobile phone products have kept consumers from purchasing new phones. China's CCID Consulting has reported that Chinese mobile phone sales volume in 2008 reached 161 million sets, lower than 185 million sets as estimated at the beginning of 2008. Advanced international manufacturers firmly stick to their position in the global market, with declining performances. On one hand, a weakening economic environment put the whole mobile phone industry in difficult times, with all international enterprises being seriously affected; on the other hand, manufacturers in new emerging market faces the dilemma of increasing output amid lowering prices, that although the international giants absorb most of the pressures to a fuller extent, smaller enterprises would still have to seek a subtle balance among scale, cost and profit. more

Chinese Handset Production Growth Down to Single Figures
China's CCID Consulting has reported that after a period of rapid growth over the past few years, the Chinese mobile handset chips market experienced a conspicuous decline in 2008. The research firm predicts that the scale of Chinese mobile phone chips market is expected to reach RMB 110 billion (US$16 billion), up by 6%, down to single-digit growth for the first time. more

China Mobile Plans $8.6 Billion 3G CAPEX in 2009
China Mobile says that it plans to spend around US$8.6 billion during 2009 alone on rolling out its 3G network - based on the home-grown TD-SCDMA technology. The company aims to deploy some 60,000 base stations in 238 cities this year. more

China Mobile Signs Deal to Lease TD-SCDMA Network from Parent Company
China Mobile Ltd has agreed to lease the TD-SCDMA network being built by its parent company, China Mobile Communications (CMCC) and has announced that it will pay a maximum of RMB1 billion (US$146 million) during 2009. The company has already invested some US$2 billion building its trial network. more

Chinese 3G Investment to Top $29 Billion

Chinese research house, CCID Consulting has reported that at the end of June 2008, China's TD-SCDMA user base had reached 50,000, and that trial commercial users exceeded 8,000. CCID Consulting forecasts that TD terminal users will reach 2.3 million by the end of 2008. more
