CAT Telecom Seeking Overseas Partner for 3G Network

Thailand's CAT Telecom is to seek a partner to assist it in bidding for a 3G licenses and roll out the network when successful. CAT executive committee chairman Krisda Kaweeyarn told The Nation newspaper that the board had told management to study several possible partnership models and that the potential partner could be either a local or a foreign telecom operator.  more

Thai Operator Cuts Subscriber Growth Forecast

Thailand's Hutchison CAT Wireless Multimedia, a CDMA based joint venture between the Communications Authority of Thailand (CAT) and Hutchison Wireless MultiMedia Holdings says that it is halving its customer growth target to 10% - it says due to the economic slowdown, high inflation and oil prices. The company had originally expected to grow its customer base to just under 1.5 million by the end of the year.  more

Thai Operator Launches EV-DO Rev. A Upgrade

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) has congratulated CAT Telecom on launching its 3G CDMA2000 service nationwide to 51 provinces in Thailand. With the expansion of 3G CDMA services, CAT Telecom expects to attract 100,000 3G customers this year.  more

Thailand's TAC Unable to Launch 3G Services until 2009

Thailand's Total Access Communication (TAC) says that it will not be able to launch its 3G network until early next year at the earliest due to regulatory problems. The company had formed a partnership with CAT Telecom to deploy a 3G network on its existing radio spectrum but says that its partner has not yet approved the plan. CAT Telecom is state owned.  more

Thai CAT Offers to Sell Thai Mobile Stake

Thailand's CAT Telecom has agreed to sell its 42% stake in its failed cellular joint venture Thai Mobile to TOT Plc for 2.4 billion baht (US$77 million). The sale follows the decision by Samart Corp. to sue Thai Mobile for failing to pay an outstanding debt of 2.65 billion baht (US$85 million) for customer and billing services provided by Samart for the past three years. TOT has yet to decide if it will accept the offer.  more

Hutchison Telecom Takes $494 Million Charge on Thai Write-Down

Hong Kong based Hutchison Telecom that it is to recognise a non-cash impairment charge of HK$3,854 million (US$494 million) in its 2007 audited consolidated financial statements in connection with the Group's investments in its mobile telecommunications business in Thailand. The company blamed an ongoing price war in the Thai market as being the primary reason for the write-down.  more

Huawei Sues Thai Operator to Recover Unpaid Invoices

Huawei has filed a lawsuit against Thailand's CAT Telecom for the non-payment of its THB7.2 billion (US$245 million) CDMA network rollout contract. According to the company, it delivered the network infrastructure on time and the payment was due last February. Despite requests, CAT Telecom has only paid 25% of the contract invoice.  more
