Sony Ericsson Shows off Challenger to the Apple iPhone
Sony Ericsson has shown off a range of new handsets. Probably most significant is a Walkman branded handset which is undoubtedly being pitched to compete with Apple's iPhone. The W960 comes with an internal 8GB memory, which they say can store around 8000 songs, and offers a PC-to-phone transfer of 1GB in less than 3 minutes. In addition to the more conventional keypad, the handset also comes with a 2.6" touch-sensitive screen which can respond to finger touch, or the use of a stylus. The handset supports both Wi-Fi and, unlike Apple's iPhone - it offers 3G connectivity. The phone adds a 3.2 megapixel camera to the mix. As with earlier Walkman phones, the W960 incorporates TrackID music recognition software. This lets you record a clip of a song on your phone and find out instantly the name of the artist, track and album. more

Mobile Phone Vendors Face Product Price Hit
According to IDC's latest EMEA Mobile Phone Tracker, the first quarter of 2007 witnessed total mobile phone shipments (including traditional mobile phones and converged devices) of 89 million units, representing year-on-year growth of 9%, which is up from around 82 million units in 1Q06. more

Sony Ericsson Doubles Q1 Profits
Sony Ericsson has reported a sharp rise in its first quarter profits, with net income jumping to EUR 254 ($346) millionfrom EUR 109 (US$148) million a year earlier. Sales rose by 47 percent to EUR 2.93 (US$3.98) billion. The company shipped 21.8 million handsets in the quarter, a 63% increase compared to the same period last year. more

Sony Ericsson Handset Shipments Rise
Sony Ericsson has reported that it shipped 19.8 million handsets during the third quarter, ending September 30, a 43% increase compared to the same period last year, and approximately double the market growth rate. Sales for the quarter were EUR2.9 (US$3.65) billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 42%. Income before taxes was EUR433 (US$544) million representing a year-on-year increase of 187%. Net income was EUR298 (US$375) million. more
