Samsung Electronics has announced the launch of the Samsung G800, what it says is the world's first 5 megapixel camera phone with 3x optical zoom on the market. Optical zoom is very common in most digital cameras, but the Samsung G800 is the first and only 5 megapixel camera phone to have this capability. Features such as face detection, and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), which are very up-to-date features even in today's digital cameras, are also equipped in the new G800. more

Sony Ericsson Shows off Challenger to the Apple iPhone
Sony Ericsson has shown off a range of new handsets. Probably most significant is a Walkman branded handset which is undoubtedly being pitched to compete with Apple's iPhone. The W960 comes with an internal 8GB memory, which they say can store around 8000 songs, and offers a PC-to-phone transfer of 1GB in less than 3 minutes. In addition to the more conventional keypad, the handset also comes with a 2.6" touch-sensitive screen which can respond to finger touch, or the use of a stylus. The handset supports both Wi-Fi and, unlike Apple's iPhone - it offers 3G connectivity. The phone adds a 3.2 megapixel camera to the mix. As with earlier Walkman phones, the W960 incorporates TrackID music recognition software. This lets you record a clip of a song on your phone and find out instantly the name of the artist, track and album. more

The image pipe is integrated in Agilent's new family of system-on-chip (SOC) sensors, which feature the enhanced-performance (EP) pixel architecture. What sets Agilent's image pipe apart from existing image signal processors (ISPs) is the degree of built-in processing intelligence and adaptability to lighting conditions, which results in exceptional image quality. The image pipe accommodates a wide range of lighting conditions, from indoor to sunlight to fluorescent, and can enhance overexposed or underexposed images. more

Camera Phones to Steal Low-End Digital Camera Market within Two Years
Within two years, low-end camera phones will take much of the market share now held by low-end standalone digital cameras. ABI Research principal analyst of global wireless operator research Kenneth Hyers says, "We believe that within the next two years, the quality of a mobile phone camera will be such that people won't need low-end standalone digital cameras. This will dramatically impact camera sales." more
