Jamaican Network to Expand Island Coverage

­Cable & Wireless is to spend J$670 million (US$7.6 million) over the next financial year improving its mobile network in Jamaica, reports the local Jamaica Observer newspaper. The expansion programme will include the commissioning of 70 new cell sites across Jamaica's 12 rural parishes.  more

Panama to Mandate Tower Sharing by Phone Networks

Panama's telecoms regulator, the Autoridad de Servicios Publicos (ASEP) has issued a direction to tower owners that they must now start sharing their infrastructure with other operators to cut down on the number of telecoms towers being installed in the country.  more

Ericsson deploys GSM/EDGE network for Digicel in Panama

Ericsson has signed a sole-supplier agreement with Digicel Group for the nationwide deployment of a GSM/EDGE network in Panama. The value of the contract was not disclosed, although it was recently reported that Digicel is planning to spend US$334 million on its Panama launch.  more

Digicel Plans $334 Million Investment in Panama

Pan-Caribeean mobile operator, Digicel Group is planning to invest at least US$334 million in its new network in Panama - reports the Jamaica Observer newspaper. Citing a report by the International Finance Corporation's (IFC), the paper said that the mobile operator is daunted by the high cost of building out the required rural network in Panama.  more

Digicel Wins Mobile License in Panama

Digicel Central America has won a competitive bid process for a license to operate a GSM mobile network in Panama. The auction took place on Wednesday, May 7th, with Digicel bidding US$86 million. Digicel's win for a mobile license in Panama is the latest milestone for the company's expansion efforts in Central America. Digicel currently operates in El Salvador and has plans to launch in Honduras later this year.  more

St Lucia gets its First Tree Shaped Mobile Phone Tower

Cable and Wireless has installed the first base station in the Caribbean nation of St Lucia which is disguised as a local palm tree. The Mono Palm as it is called is shaped like a palm tree with a trunk and palms fronds at the top. The palm fronds are made of plastic and metal and they flutter in the wind. The Mono Palm stands at 71 ft. and is located high up on ridge in Monchy where it blends naturally with the green vegetation in the area.  more

Monaco Telecom to Test Mobile WiMAX Initiatives

Monaco Telecom has announced it is working with Alvarion, Cisco and Nokia to establish a Center of Excellence on WiMAX in the Principality. This initiative between all four companies will demonstrate the mobility and high-speed features of Mobile WiMAX 802.16e-2005.  more
