Scarborough Research says that its latest study reveals that Atlanta, leads the USA in cell phone penetration. Three-quarters of households there subscribe to cellular phone service. Following closely behind are Detroit, MI (74%); and Austin, TX, Washington, D.C., and Miami, FL (72% each). The U.S. markets with the lowest cell phone penetration are Charleston, WV (47%), Wilkes-Barre, PA (52%), buffalo, NY (53%), Syracuse, NY (54%) and Lexington, KY (55%). more

VoiceStream to upgrade its network to EDGE
VoiceStream Wireless has signed a three-year agreement with Nortel Networks, estimated to be worth approximately US$300 million, for upgrades to its national GSM network. The agreement calls for Nortel Networks to supply radio base station equipment, switching and professional services for evolution of the VoiceStream Wireless network to provide EDGE voice and high-speed data services. It also includes Intelligent Network (IN) equipment to support billing and location-based services. more

Omnipoint Wins Licences To Cover 18.9 Million Customers
In recent re-auctions of licences to offer digital phone services, Omnipoint won 34 licences in areas which cover a potential 18.9 million customers. They paid US$45.1 million for the licence, or $2.39 per person living in the area. Omnipoint now has a licence to build a digital network in Detroit, St. Lewis, buffalo, Rochester, Cleveland and Chicago, along with increased radio spectrum in areas that they already cover. As Omnipoint is a GSM1900 operator, all these areas will have GSM1900 coverage and expand the existing roaming agreement with Vodafone. More importantly, this agreement now means that the various GSM1900 networks have licences that will eventually cover 99% of the USA population, giving GSM the largest footprint in the USA, beating the competitor technology CDMA. This will improve our roaming service and make dual / triple band phones more economical." more
