Consumers using mobile internet to bag bargains on the high street

Retailers need to be ready to face a new breed of savvy consumers, according to new research into the way people use broadband-enabled mobile devices to access the web while they are out and about. The research, which was carried out in the UK among users of the bt ToGo smartphone, points to a growing trend for shoppers to compare prices and look up product reviews and recommendations by other consumers when they are on the move.  more

Comfone Launches Remote Wi-Fi Test Service

Comfone says that it has launched a Wi-Fi remote test service to facilitate the testing and rollout of Wi-Fi roaming services. The service enables operators and software suppliers to remotely test the inter-operability between WISPr client software and over 30 test hotspots located in a single location in Bern, Switzerland.  more

BT Launches Broadband Service with HTC Smartphones

Orange UK Expands WiFI Coverage

UK network operator, Orange has signed a deal with WiFi provider, The Cloud to allow its subscribers to use the WiFi network as part of their mobile subscriber contract. Orange already has WiFi agreements in place with bt OpenZone, France Telecom and WeRoam. In the UK this latest agreement extends Orange's WiFi access to more than 10,000 hotspots.  more

BT Plans to Build World's Largest Free WiFi Network

The UK based British Telecom (bt) has agreed to create what it says will be the world's largest "free" WiFi network - in a deal with Spain's FON. Every person who agrees to share a small portion of their home broadband connection, by opening up a separate, secure channel on their wireless router, will be able to share the connection of any other member. bt Total Broadband customers will also be able to use bt's premium existing hotspot network bt Openzone, including 12 Wireless Cities.  more

10-Fold Rise in Government Spending on Wireless over Four Years

A new report from Juniper Research finds that the global market for mobile and wireless hardware, software and services in Local Government will grow exponentially from US$802 million in 2005 to US$8.6 billion in 2010. Juniper's wide-ranging research and industry interview programme show that independent wireless networks capable of interoperation with 2G and 3G systems are central to the mobile future for local government. WiFi has been widely used since 2002 for wireless broadband in local government networks but the much greater range and higher data-transfer speeds of WiMAX will drive its emergence as a wide-area broadband infrastructure solution for local authorities. more

Orange Combines Wifi, 3G & GPRS to Simplify Mobile Data Access"

Orange UK has announced the launch of Business Everywhere - an integrated mobile solution for connecting to business applications via the Internet which will include access to over 13,000 Wifi hotspots across the UK and the rest of the world. Available in January 2006, Business Everywhere software for laptop data cards allows access to 3G, GPRS and Wifi networks. Combined with new data pricing. the new software will greatly simplify the management of mobility solutions for business customers by offering one contract, one bill and one customer service point of contact, regardless of the network accessed. more
