Compound Growth Rate for China's Mobile TV Output - Report
China's CCID Consulting, has reported that with the drive of export and domestic demands, China's mobile phone output continues to grow in 2007, reaching 554 million sets, with a growth rate of 25.4%. The export volume wass 322 million sets, which accounts for 58.2% of all phones made in the country. Currently, China's global mobile phone manufacturing base is quite steady. Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson have transferred their capacities to China; because of this factor, the export volume of China's mobile phone increases 26.2%. Meanwhile, China's domestic mobile phone enterprises' capacity increases are evident, especially ZTE, Huawei and K-Touch. more

Wireless-Chip Market Outpaced Wireline-Chip Market in 2007
Growing adoption of 3G technologies and feature-rich cell-phone chips led to a 13% increase in sales of cellular baseband processors in 2007, according to The Linley Group. Sales of networking chips, in contrast, declined by about 1% during the same period according to their new report. The slowdown in wired-communications chips is also reflected in the FPGA market as sales of FPGAs for communications systems declined 7%. more

Nokia May Outsource Mobile TV Development Work
Nokia is reported to be considering canceling its in-house development of DVB-H chips for Mobile TV handsets and outsource its supply requirements. The local DigiTimes news publication said that "chipmakers, including Texas Instruments (TI), DiBcom, Newport Media and Siano Mobile Silicon, are indicated as potential partners for the DVB-H chips with Nokia" citing unnamed sources in Taiwan. more

IC Insights has released its ranking of the top 25 worldwide semiconductor (ICs and OSDs - optoelectronics, sensors, and discretes) sales leaders for 2006. For the top 25 suppliers, it was clearly a year of the haves versus the have-nots. Although six of the twenty-five suppliers posted revenue spikes of greater than 35% in 2006, about one-third of the companies (eight) registered below-average sales growth (i.e., less than 9%) last year. more
