Infineon and Broadcom Improving Market Share in Cellular Basebands

­Due to increased demand in the end of year holiday season, Q3 2009 cellular baseband revenues and shipments grew for the first time since Q3 2008, according to Strategy Analytics. In its latest quarterly baseband market share tracker report, the firm revealed that total cellular baseband revenue reached $3.02 billion in Q3 2009, with strong growth coming from all markets. This study also shows that total cellular baseband revenues in 2008 were $11.15 billion and provisionally estimates $11.04 billion for 2009.  more

Chinese Handset Production Growth Down to Single Figures

China's CCID Consulting has reported that after a period of rapid growth over the past few years, the Chinese mobile handset chips market experienced a conspicuous decline in 2008. The research firm predicts that the scale of Chinese mobile phone chips market is expected to reach RMB 110 billion (US$16 billion), up by 6%, down to single-digit growth for the first time.  more

Wireless-Chip Market Outpaced Wireline-Chip Market in 2007

Growing adoption of 3G technologies and feature-rich cell-phone chips led to a 13% increase in sales of cellular baseband processors in 2007, according to The Linley Group. Sales of networking chips, in contrast, declined by about 1% during the same period according to their new report. The slowdown in wired-communications chips is also reflected in the FPGA market as sales of FPGAs for communications systems declined 7%.  more

RF Component Profits Up in Third Quarter of 2006

The new Strategy Analytics report notes that almost 60 percent of the leading suppliers of RF components reported significant profits in Q3, up from both Q2 and Q1.
