Brasil Telecom deal boosts customers and debt
TNL PCS, which trades as Oi, completed the acquisition of Brasil Telecom in January 2009, thereby boosting its customer base to 31.84m at the end of Q1 09. The quarterly gain of 7.45m included approximately 5.6m Brasil Telecom customers. The prepaid base increased by 6.37m to 26.86m, while the contract base added 1.08m to finish on 4.98m, or 15.6% of the total. Prior to the acquisition, Oi had reported a marginally higher figure of 16% contract, although it only quoted this figure to the nearest 1%. more
Brasil Telecom Sees Market Leading Growth - Despite Record High Churn
Brazil's smallest operator, Brasil Telecom, has released its first set of results as a subsidiary of Telemar (Oi), the deal having been fully approved by the authorities before Christmas. For now Brasil Telecom remains a separately listed company and will continue to release its own results, although the company tells us that its Investor Relations function was merged with that of Oi in January. more

Brazil's Penetration Set to Surpass 80% as Total Market Reaches 140m
Brazilian penetration is racing upwards, with a 14.0pp gain in the twelve months ending 30th September 2008 taking the figure to 73.2%. This compares to an 8.3pp gain in the prior twelve months. At the time of writing, penetration is likely to be approaching 80%, and although it is common for markets to slow down as 100% penetration is neared, a penetration rate in excess of 90% by the end of 2009 is a possibility. more

The Top Operators in Caribbean & LatAm by Subscriber Growth
Between them, the ten fastest growing operators in Latin America and the Caribbean added a total of over 52m new connections over the past year, or around two thirds of the regionÃ's 78m total. Quarter on quarter, the bias towards the industry leaders was even more pronounced, with 17.55m of the 19.0m or so new connections happening at the top end of the market. The quarter is somewhat atypical, due to the dismemberment of Telemig, which has boosted the numbers for both Vivo and TNL, but this is a region with an unusual concentration of power. more
