Order chocolate by SMS

The chocolate manufacturer, Cadbury's has teamed up with the Indian GSM network operator, BPL Mobile to enable its customers to pay for sweets purchased via vending machines, using an SMS order. Cadbury says that it has set up 30 vending machines in Mumbai that will accept orders by SMS. more

Indian network steps up fight against fraud

Subex Systems, the Bangalore, India-based Telecom Software Products company says that it has signed a contract with the largest mobile operator in India, Bharti Cellular, to deploy its flagship Fraud Management System (FMS), Ranger. Bharti had earlier deployed Ranger FMS in two of its networks - Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. With the new order, Ranger has been deployed across all the networks of Bharti in India. more

Four Indian networks link up

Four Indian GSM networks, BPL Mobile, Escotel, RPG Cellular and Spice Telecom, have joined together to form the MobileFirst alliance. With a contiguous pan-India footprint, the MobileFirst alliance will offer enhanced value across tariffs, roaming, long distance calling and new generation technology and services to its 3 million subscribers across 700 towns in the country. The alliance will also deliver a common customer relationship management platform to provide home network experience anywhere/anytime to its subscribers across the alliance member networks. more

MMS launched in India

India's BPL Mobile has launched India's first Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). With the BPL Mobile launch, India will be the 4th country in Asia Pacific to commercially launch the MMS service. At an introductory pricing of US$4.12 per month, BPL Mobile will offer 100 MMSs (outgoing only, incoming will be free) as well as unlimited Mobile Internet access to its subscribers on their mobile phones. Post the 100 MMSs, each outgoing MMS will cost US$0.06 per message. more

India's Subex Systems has won a contract from BPL Mobile to deploy its Fraud Management System, Ranger, to be deployed in all BPL Mobile networks. BPL Mobile offers cellular telephony service in Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu (excluding Chennai), Pondicherry and Mumbai. It has a total subscriber base of over 800,000 customers. more

Multi-lingual use for picture SMS

India's BPL Mobile Cellular is to start offering SMS in local languages. The service is only available on Nokia handsets and is an interesting use of Coded Picture Messaging Technology (CPMT) which uses the picture messaging capability of the Nokia handsets. The users can type in a code to send one of 50 preset messages in local languages. more

France Telecom may be about to sell Indian asset

France Telecom has transferred its holding in the Indian GSM network, BPL Mobile from France Mobile International to its subsidiary, Wirefree Services Belgium. France Telecom currently holds 26% of BPL Mobile, but its stake will be reduced to 9.3% after BPL Mobile has completed its merger with Birla-Tata-AT&T. more

Orange band name not to be used in India

India's BPL Mobile, which is 26% owned by France Telecom has said that it has no intention of re-branding the company under the orange label. Mr Rajeev Chandrasekhar, chairman and CEO BPL told The Financial Express "BPL is a very strong brand there (Mumbai) and there is no question of our replacing it with any another brand. Our philosophy is clear: we do nothing which doesn't enhance value for us,"" more
