Android and iOS Surge to New Smartphone OS Record in Second Quarter

Shift in smartphone market with lower-end devices to dominate by 2016

­The smartphone market will see a huge shift over the next five years, moving from predominantly premium devices aimed at advanced users towards cheaper, mass-market devices. According to the latest research from Informa Telecoms & Media, 81% of all smartphones shipped in 2011 were sold at a wholesale price above US$300; however, this proportion is expected to decline to below 50% in 2016.  more

RIM handset testing dominates while Android development is on the rise and Symbian falls

­Despite an overall decline of 13.6% over the past 12 months, RIM continues to have the highest total share of smartphone testing time (45%), according to internal statistics from the remote testing vendor, DeviceAnywhere. Worldwide Smartphone Sales Reached Its Lowest Growth Rate in Q3 '08

In the third quarter of 2008, the global smartphone market reached its weakest year-on-year growth since Gartner began tracking the industry. Nokia kick-starts GPS market in Europe

According to a new Ovum forecast, the market for GPS-enabled mobile devices will grow rapidly, from an estimated 163.9 million shipments in 2007 to almost 572 million in 2012. In the early years this growth has been driven by the CDMA players, namely Qualcomm, serving large CDMA markets such as the US, where the E911 mandate stipulates the use of location-based technologies in handsets, and markets such as Korea and Japan where demand for location-enabled services is higher than in other regions.  more
