Mobile Device Brands Canadian Consumers are Considering in 2012

Canadians love their Smartphone, Tablet and eReader devices. The January 2012 wave of Ipsos Reid's Mobil-ology, a study of the mobile market in Canada, showed strong and steady growth in all three markets. In the six month period between August 2011 and January 2012, Smartphone ownership grew by 13%, Tablets by 66%, and eReaders by 43%. In absolute terms, market penetration of Smartphones grew from 24% of Canadians stating they owned one in August 2011 to 34% in January 2012. For Tablets, 3% of Canadians said they owned such a device in August 2011 and 10% said they owned one in January 2012. In the eReader segment, 4% of Canadians said they owned one in August 2011 with 10% making that claim five months later.  more

Smartphone Market Share Increased Rapidly Worldwide According to AdMob

Mobile advertising agency, AdMob has reported that despite challenging economic conditions, smartphones continued to gain significant market share worldwide over the past six months, rising from 26 percent to 33 percent of hits to its adserver platform in February 2009.  more

BlackBerries Arrive in Tunisia

Tunisian mobile network operator, Tunisie Telecom has announced the commercial launch of the blackberry solution in the country - with the system being supplied by Alcatel-Lucent. Based on its distribution agreement with RIM, Alcatel-Lucent will leverage its local presence in the region to provide Tunisie Telecom the end-to-end implementation, launch, and on-going support for delivering the blackberry solution to the Tunisian market.  more

Despite Recession - US Smartphone Market Still Growing

According to The NPD Group, consumer sales of smartphones to U.S. consumers represented 23 percent of all handset sales in the fourth quarter (Q4) 2008 compared to just 12 percent in Q4 2007. Led by the release of Apple's iPhone 3G at $199, the average price for a smartphone fell 23 percent from $216 in Q4 2007 to $167 last year.  more

Are Smartphones Immune to the Financial Crisis in Western Europe?

The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 31.9 million units, 36.1% higher than the 23.5 million units shipped in 2007.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Manufacturers continued to struggle against low consumer confidence in both emerging and mature markets.  more

Western European Mobile Phone Market now in Recession

Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western European mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 190.5 million units in Western Europe, 5.9% lower than the 202.5 million units shipped in 2007.  more
