India's Idea Cellular - Pressure in Many Markets as Churn Balloons

Net additions at India's fifth largest mobile player, IDEA Cellular, declined in Q2 09 compared to the first three months of the year by more than 17%, despite the launch of two new circles. Services got under way in Orissa in April and then in Tamil Nadu in May, bringing the total coverage to 15 of India's 23 telecoms circles after launches in Mumbai and bihar in the second half of last year. The two new operations contributed 0.22m new customers in the quarter, but a crash in net adds in Mumbai from 427k in Q1 09 to 189k in Q2 limited the overall increase in the four new circles to 1.00m, down from 1.02m three months ago. Yet IDEA's 11 established circles performed worse, with net additions off in all but two circles, and by 21% in aggregate.  more

Idea Cellular Subscriber Base Passes 30 Million Mark

India's Idea Cellular has reported that it half year with a subscriber base of 30.38 million, adding 6.38 million subscribers during the half year, reflecting an improvement in national market share from 9.4% to 9.8% during the period.  more

Indian Terrorists Attack More Mobile Phone Towers

Attacks on mobile phone towers in India's bihar state has stepped up, with over half a dozen of them being blown up in the past one week, police said. The towers were blown up in Gaya and Aurangabad districts, a police official said.  more

Indian Operator Secures Funding to Expand Rural Coverage

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group is providing a US$100 million loan to Indian GSM network operator, Idea Cellular to enable the extension of services to bihar, one of the few states in India without a well-developed telecommunications network. The loan will also help establish a national long-distance network to meet growing demand for services.  more

Private Equity Group Invests in Indian Mobile Operator

The private equity group, Providence Equity Partners has taken a twenty percent stake in Aditya Birla Telecom (ABTL) - a wholly-owned subsidiary of India's Idea Cellular - for US$640 million. ABTL owns the telecom mobile license for the bihar service area and will hold a 16 per cent stake in Indus Towers, the company's tower subsidiary which is co-owned by Vodafone Essar and Bharti Airtel.  more

India's Idea Cellular Doubles 9 Month Net Profit

India's Idea Cellular has reported that it ended the third quarter of its financial year (last quarter of 2007) with a subscriber base of 21.05 million, adding 2.38 million subscribers during the quarter. In its current 11 service areas of operation, Idea increased its subscriber market share from 15.6% at the end of Sep 07, to 15.8% at the end of Dec 07.  more

Nokia Siemens Wins $900 Million Indian Contract

India's Bharti Airtel has signed a US$900 million network expansion contract across it's mobile and fixed networks with Nokia Siemens Networks. In the first multi platform network contract of its kind to be awarded in India, Nokia Siemens Networks will expand Airtel?s GSM network in eight circles; its National Long Distance and International Long Distance network with 1.8 million Next Generation Network (NGN) ports ? the largest ever NGN contract in the country ? and its International Calling Card prepaid service capacity by 4.5 million news users. more

Maoists Ban Mobile Phones

Maoist terrorists in parts of India have issued warnings to villages to stop using cellphones, reports The Hindu newspaper. There did not seem to be any specific reason for their ban on cell phones, other than possibly the ongoing terrorising of the countryside. more
