Idea Cellular Gets Approval for Tower Separation
India's Idea Cellular has received approval from its shareholders to split off its tower assets into a separate company, Idea Cellular Towers Infrastructure. The new company, which will manage Idea's 11,000 towers will now be merged with Indus Towers, the three-way joint venture with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar. more

Reliance Seeks to Sell Further Stake in Towers Subsidiary
India's Reliance Communications (RCOM) is reported to be planning to sell another 5% stake in its wireless tower business (RTIL) by the end of this year. The Economic Times reports that JP Morgan has invited bids for the stake - which it aims to sell for more than the $345 million that the company got for the 5% it sold earlier this year. The sale at the time valued the tower operations at US$6.75 billion. more

Three Indian Operators Consider Merging Tower Operations
Three of India's GSM networks, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular are reported to be considering splitting off their respective tower operations and merging the three companies into a super-network which would be shared by all three operators. The Business Line newspaper reports that the three companies together own more than 70,000 towers across the country. more

India Subscriber Growth Outstrips China in Q3
For the first time ever quarterly net additions in India exceeded those in China in Q3 2006, even though the Chinese figure itself reached a record high in the period. A total of 17.065m new customers adopted mobile services in India in the three months to 30th September compared to 16.807m in China. Total customer numbers in India reached almost 123m by the end of Q3 2006, and penetration climbed 1.5 percentage points in the quarter to 11.2%. more
