IN DEPTH: The Top Operators by Subscriber Base in North America
The North American mobile market has not changed significantly since our last quarterly review. The ten largest companies, which account for the vast majority of subscribers in the region, have maintained their relative positioning over the quarter, as AT&T heads the table with 71.4m customers, ahead of Verizon (67.2m), Sprint Nextel (52.8m), T-Mobile (30.8m), Alltel (13.2m), Rogers and Bell Mobility from Canada (7.4m and 6.3m), US Cellular (6.2m), Telus, the third Canadian company (5.7m) and MetroPCS (4.4m). Canada to Hit 20 Million Subscribers, But Still Room for Growth
The Canadian market looks set to reach 20 million customers by the end of the year, having added 0.54 million customers in Q3 to hit 19.54 million at the end of the quarter. Traditionally Q4 is the strongest quarter of the year, so it will be surprising if Canada does not break the 20 million barrier in the current quarter. This impending milestone should not be treated with anything like jubilation, however, since the Canadian market is still extremely underpenetrated by reference to its socio-economic peers, with a rate of just 58.4% at the end of Q3. Since Q3 06, penetration has only risen by 4.2pp, and the total market has grown by just 8.7%. more

Rogers Wireless and TELUS Mobility Q3 2007 Results
First and third placed Canadian mobile operators, Rogers Wireless and TELUS Mobility, both recorded their best net additions of the year so far in Q3 2007, as is traditionally the case in this seasonally-affected market. TELUS came in very slightly short of what it achieved in the third quarter last year, with 135k net new connections, against 137k 12 months earlier. Rogers did 20% better than it managed last year, with 243k net additions (up from 203k), almost exceeding the recent records set in Q3 2005 and Q4 2006 when it registered 244k new customers. more

Canada's Rogers keeps gap with Bell to over 1m, as Telus closes up
Canadian market leader Rogers Wireless has maintained its lead over Bell Mobility at over 1m customers, despite being outperformed by its arch-rival in terms of proportionate growth for the first time in five quarters. Quarter on quarter growth at Rogers fell to an all-time low of just 0.7% in Q2 2007 whilst Bell Mobility recovered from its first ever negative quarter in Q1 2007 to post growth of 1.1%. This reduced Rogers' lead over Bell from 1.043m to 1.028m customers, as it moved onto a total of 6.91m to Bell's 5.88m. As the market leader has opened up its lead over Bell over the last couple of years, so third placed TELUS Mobility has closed down the gap on its nearest rival. TELUS trumped both companies with net additions of 128k in Q2 2007 - more than both Rogers and Bell put together - closing the margin between itself and Bell to 612k and taking 30% out of the advantage held by the larger company a year earlier. more
