Canada's Telesystem International Wireless (TIW) has announced that it has signed an agreement to sell its minority interests in two Brazilian cellular operations, Americel and Telet to an affiliate of Bell Canada International and Telecom Americas for US$153 million. The agreement is a result of the purchasing company's offer to acquire 100% of the voting shares in the two operators. TIW has a 16.3% economic participation in the companies. The closing of the sale is conditional on certain customary regulatory and contractual approvals. Americel, which operates in the Centre-West region of Brazil began operation in December 1997 and had nearly 400,000 subscribers by the end of last year. Telet, which operates in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, began operation in February 1999 and had 524,000 subscribers at the end of last year." more
